A source with knowledge of the situation tells us that the Browns have approached former Steelers coach Bill Cowher regarding the possibility of becoming the next coach in Cleveland.

Per the source, the Browns are willing to give Cowher a contract worth $8 million to $9 million per year.

Presumably, Cowher’s arrival would occur only if G.M. Phil Savage were fired or significantly marginalized. (Maybe Savage can go work for the Bills — or if all else fails he can root for them.) Cowher would want final say over personnel, and Cowher would want to install one or more of his former Steelers colleagues into key positions.

Likely candidates, if they can finagle a path out of Pittsburgh, would be director of football operations Kevin Colbert and/or director of business operations Omar Khan.

Cowher played for the Browns (i.e., Ravens) from 1980 through 1982, and he served as special teams coach in 1985 and 1986. He was moved to defensive backs coach in 1987, and he remained in that position through 1988.
Oh how would I love for Bill to return to coaching with the Browns... He played 3 of his 6 seasons as a player with the Browns and he started his career coaching as the special teams coach for the Browns.

NO, the Bengals need him not the Browns. They need that inspiration/motivation.

I remember a few years back when all the Giants fans wanted Coughlin out and Cowher out of quick retirement. I still think we would have turned out great.

Palmer, your team needs more than inspiration and motivation. Your team needs good players, no injuries, and about 50 miracles. Not including the 2009 Hail Mary's

They have a lot of good players. They just need a healthy Palmer back, healthy offensive line, defense is getting better still need to get some pressure on the opposing QB's though. Yes, no injuries sounds good. We might be 1-9-1 but the team has more talent than that. Next year WILL be a better year. With the new Defensive Coordinator Mike Zimmer I have noticed a difference in the Defense and that's what has been hurting us for years. Now, our QB is hurt and we are playing with a backup QB and the offense can't get a running game and sucks.

PALMER WE NEED YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just not this year. Give it some time. They'll blow everybody minds one of these years. just wait. just wait. Even though I know the Detroit Lion fans have been saying that for years and the same thing happens each and every year.

Times are changing though. Millen is finally out of there, and some mjor changes will be made to finally get things in the right direction. Plus, they did have 7 wins last year. Which is a big improvement from the 2 years previous with a combined win total of 3, and than there`s this year.....

There are a few teams that need a new coach, and the Browns aren`t one of `em.

The Browns need a coach.. Crennel is by no means a good coach. He makes bad decisions all the time, he has horrible clock management. He needs to go. He is not fit to be a head coach.

If the Browns finish the year out on a decent note he won't be going anywhere.

I`m not saying he`s a great coach. I`m just saying that they are in a better position than lots of other teams for the time being. Yes, they are under expectations this year, but Quinn seems to be making them closer to winning than they were with Anderson. I like Anderson & all, he is just having an off year.

Browns & Bengals are just having an off year, just like the Lions & the Seahawks. Chiefs, Raiders, 49ers & Rams are a different story.

I could be wrong. I'm not the Browns GM so I can't really say for sure.

I've been wrong before and I'm sure I will be again at some point.

It doesn't even matter how the Browns finish, unless they make the playoffs. If Bill Cowher would accept an offer to the Browns, Crennel is on an airplane out.

It would be great to see Cowher back on the sideline.

I like Cowher alot, but Tomlin is GREAT, and I'd rather have Tomlin than Cowher right now.

No, we don't. We're fine with Wade Phillips... Besides Garrett is the next head coach once Wade is gone.
We could always use him as our defensive coordinator. And Jason Garrett at Head coach.

...WHAT!!!!

you've gotta be outta your mind. There's no way that either Wade or Cowher would take a Defensive Coordinator position. If Cowher comes back, it'll be as a Head Coach.

Successful coaches don't downgrade themselves...
