Jerry Stackhouse believes he still has a lot of minutes in him -- he's just not getting the chance to use them in Dallas, so he is broaching the idea that maybe it's time for him and the Mavericks to part ways.

Stackhouse has made no demands or ultimatums, and he made clear after practice Monday that there were no personal conflicts between him and new coach Rick Carlisle.

What Stackhouse wants is more playing time, a larger role on the team, but he also sees the direction the Mavericks are taking. So his agent, Jeff Schwartz, has started to take inventory of potential interest from around the league.

"The team is always going to protect itself, so I can't force their hand to do anything," Stackhouse said to the Dallas-area media. "I don't really know all the options right now. It's to the point now where it's time to start researching some things and see if there are some other possibilities that make more sense for me right now."

Stackhouse, 34, who has been with the Mavericks since 2004, has seen his minutes diminish with each season (down to an average of 17.6 minutes this year). He was inactive for Sunday's game against the Knicks, and he knows that waiting in the wings are young shooting guards Antoine Wright and Gerald Green.

"Sometimes, that cycle comes," Stackhouse said in The Dallas Morning News. "When I came to Philadelphia [as a rookie], Jeff Malone was still a very capable player. But they said: 'Jeff, Jerry Stackhouse is the starting shooting guard here, and we're starting over.' He still went and played somewhere for a couple more seasons.

"And you got to start that process sometimes. I'm not mad, and not the first one that the process has started with. It's going to start with some more here before too long."

Stackhouse is being paid $7 million this season, and has a partial guarantee of $2 million next season. The Mavericks could buy him out or waive him, but the best option might be to work out a trade, though Stackhouse is currently in a shooting slump (29 percent) and is dealing with a sore right heel.

Owner Mark Cuban said in an e-mail to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram the Mavericks were working with Stackhouse, and believe he "can be a valuable contributor to the organization on the court and off."

Team president Donnie Nelson told the Star-Telegram: "With our relationship and openly and honestly communicating, we'll be able to come up with a game plan and hopefully that game plan will be one that includes Jerry in a Maverick uniform. If it's just not a comfortable situation, if it's a situation where the minutes are just not there, then we'll work together with his agent and see if there's some win-win together for both of us."
I've loved stack, but it's time to let him go. 29% from the field, old legs. Give him to some bad team, he has a 6 million expiring, maybe we can get a pick out of him. It'll probably be just a second but who cares. It would just mean more time for Gerald and Antoine

Come retire in Detroit <3

But seriously, I wouldn't mind him back for a year. He would expire with AI and Sheed. Give Herrmann away, and someone else.

and what is detroit going to do with all of their cap space? i cant see them getting chris bosh or lebron james in 2010. i honestly think their better of keeping AI for 1-2 more seasons.

Why would LeBron be outta the question? I mean you'd think he'd wanna go to a winning franchise...

Lol, none of you can be serious if you think LeBron will leave Cleveland for Detroit. Its not going to happen, Id put money on it.

Cavs, Knicks, Lakers - Only teams with a chance.

No way in HELL he leave Cleveland to go to NY.

He will stay in Cleveland. We all know it.

And will the Lakers even have any CAP at all?

Sonny Vaccaro, a former shoe executive who is as well connected as anyone in the game of basketball, believes LeBron James will end up with the Knicks in 2010.

The Nets were once believed to be the favorites to land James, but with their Brooklyn arena project stalled, the club looks like they will be stuck in New Jersey.

“LeBron’s relationship with Jay-Z will go on regardless,” Vaccaro said. “He’ll be an international celebrity in New York. If the Nets aren’t in Brooklyn, he’s not going over there for even $200 million. They’re putting pieces together. They’re doing the right things. They’re just living in the wrong building.”

Vaccaro believes James will depart Cleveland regardless of what they do to try to keep him.

“LeBron is this generation’s personality,” said Vaccaro, not one to shy away from hyperbole. “Even though Cleveland has done everything right, you don’t get to Mount Rushmore from Cleveland. He has to go to New York or Los Angeles. There’s no question. The money will be available anywhere. But this is about his persona.”

A lot of Mavs fans want us to save up to have a lot of cap room for 2010 offseason, not for Lebron though. But Chris Bosh. Bosh's family is from Dallas, and he was born and raised and played high school ball in Dallas.

Haha, only cause those 3 teams include Cleveland.
He will stay with Cleveland. Remember I said that.

Pistons have a chance at Bosh. And if not they will go after Boozer and company this off-season.

Privately, LeBron James' circle had been telling people that they don't just expect him to leave in the summer of 2010, but in the words of one James associate to a high-ranking league official: He's gone. With the Knicks, there are two teams a source familiar with James' thinking says intrigue him: The Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks.

It's all rumors man...
I see no reason for LBJ to go to NY. So he can be a "celebrity?"

Get real man, LeBron wants to win. There is plenty of teams that can offer him the max, I believe 18 teams can. I can bet 12 of those 18 teams will be better than the Knicks.

He is going to stick with Cleveland, where he can get MORE money and play for a competing team.

Or he can go to the Nets, where he gets money and will play for a solid team. Or Detroit where he will play for a great team with weapons.

Its obvious LeBron wants to be a worldwide icon, and he cant do that in Detroit or Cleveland.

The Knicks are improving, and who doesnt want to play in D'Antoni's offense?

The Nets dont stand a chance, how many times do I have to say this? They wont be in Brooklyn by next season, and despite his relationship with Jay-Z, The Medowlands arent good enough.

Only time will tell.

Lmao, he is going to NY. There is no doubt about it. You know how I know??? Because if he was going to stay in Cleveland he wouldve already said he wants to sign and wouldve already gotten that huge contract he would demand. I mean seriously lets be real here, in New York he will be the talk of the town and the league. He will reach a Michael Jordan-esque type of level which he cant reach in Cleveland.

It doesnt matter how crappy the Knicks are right now. He does everything for the Cavs right now as it is. The Knicks have tons more money than the Cavs to give him. Last time I checked the Knicks are the 2nd wealthiest team in the NBA with or without the bad players, so he knows that the Knicks will find pieces around him.

Lebron going to the Knicks. Write it down.

Taking CAP into effect, they have one of the worst payrolls in the league as well. And Cleveland can offer millions more than any team can.
