BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Celtics have waived forward Darius Miles, who missed the past two seasons with knee injuries and who was suspended without pay for 10 games this season for violating the NBA's anti-drug program.

The Celtics said Monday that its training camp roster now has 15 players.

Boston signed Miles as a free agent Aug. 22. He averaged 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds in six preseason games.

Miles' suspension will begin with the first game of the regular season for which he is eligible and physically able to play.

The 27-year-old was selected third overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2000 draft. He has averaged 10.6 points and 5.2 rebounds in his career.

Someone else will sign Miles.
He was really impressive this preseason.
Only reason they decided to cut him was because they didnt want to keep a good player with minimum minutes.

On Monday the Boston Celtics waived forward Darius Miles. The team already has 15 players signed, so there simply wasn't room for Miles. If the team wanted to keep him they were going to have to get rid of someone else. That didn't happen. InsideHoops.com editor Jeff Lenchiner was with Miles a few days ago for a quick 90-second exclusive interview. This exclusive mini-interview was recorded before the team parted ways with him.

InsideHoops.com: Talk about the last couple of seasons.

Darius Miles: It was hard. I was fine... It was just hard to be on a team that didn't want to play you.

InsideHoops.com: How is it being here with the Celtics? It's a crowded roster, but at the least it's good experience for you here.

Darius Miles: It's a blessing to even be a part of this, whether it's for two months or whether it's for a year. That I even have a chance to come and play for them. They didn't have to do that. They didn't have to even take a chance on me. It's a blessing. Everyone on the team has accepted me.

InsideHoops.com: How has your game changed from a few years ago?

Darius Miles: I'm not a number one, number two option anymore. I'm more of a role player.

InsideHoops.com: You were always thought of as a small forward who was versatile enough to play other spots. Is that still the case?

Darius Miles: I still do that.

InsideHoops.com: So now should we think of you as a three who leans more towards the four, or more towards the two?

Darius Miles: I can do both. Either one.

Forward Darius Miles, who signed a non-guaranteed contract with the Celtics Aug. 22 and played in six preseason games, was waived yesterday.

Miles averaged 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds in 10.4 minutes, numbers that weren't good enough to keep him around.

Miles has not played in the NBA since 2006, when it was determined he had incurred a career-ending knee injury with the Portland Trail Blazers. He has since had surgery and is attempting a comeback.

But if he makes a team, he also faces a 10-game suspension for testing positive for phentermine, a banned diet drug that he has denied taking.

Danny Ainge, the Celtics executive director of basketball operations/general manager, said Miles was a "model citizen" who showed "he still has a lot of basketball left in him."

Coach Doc Rivers said Miles has potential to return to the league and was a professional in his time with the Celtics.

"He was terrific," said Rivers. "Even when we let him go, he thanked us and said it was nice being in a professional organization and all that.

"He was professional. I had read and heard a lot of stuff that they said Darius was and he was none of that here."

his playin career is basically over.. his injury was deemed career-ending. and thats why the blazers were allowed to waive him like they did. now the celtics picked him up for practice reasons only. then he starts off by violating the drug policy.

With coach Doc Rivers beginning to work on his rotation of players, Miles did not get off the bench in Friday's preseason loss to the Knicks, which presaged Monday's move.

sorry he's done..
