EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Super Bowl star Plaxico Burress was suspended for one game by the New York Giants on Wednesday for missing a workout earlier in the week. His agent insisted the receiver had an undisclosed family emergency and will appeal the ban to the NFL Players Association.

Because the unbeaten Giants have a bye this weekend, Burress will miss the Oct. 5 game against Seattle if the suspension is upheld.

The Giants refused to say why Burress was suspended, but agent Drew Rosenhaus claimed the nine-year veteran did not attend Monday's workout because of a family emergency that has now been resolved.

The suspension took effect immediately, meaning Burress will not be allowed to return to team activities until the day after the Seahawks game. He will miss two paychecks, totaling $235,294.12 of his $2 million annual base salary.

Rosenhaus said that Burress spoke with Giants special assistant Charles Way on Monday evening, but he added there was "miscommunication" between the player and the team.

When asked specifically why Burress did not telephone the team Monday to discuss the absence, Rosenhaus avoided answering the question.

One thing we know about Tom Coughlin is that he doesn't handle bullsh*t too well.

Excuses, excuses...pretty sad from a grown-ass man.

If his "family emergency" is legit, then there's no reason Plax couldn't make a damn phone call to the team.

It's called responsibility.

Now the Seahawks have a chance at beating the Giants on Week 5... Don't know if they will, but it's very possible.

No, we'll still beat the 'Hawks, we lose one reciever and they dont have any...

Our defense is only giving up 14ppg, Eli has shown he can be counted on when we need it. Not to mention we have three very capable running backs in Bradshaw, Jacobs and Ward to match-up against their very good rush defense.

We'll win. Plax isnt the sole factor in our wins, its been Eli and our defense.

It certainly doesn't help...but you know it's not right to let him slide on this, just to better your chances at winning.

They were reporting earlier on ESPN that he's been in 2 domestic disputes the last few months, one that ended up in a restraining order. So that "family emergency" thing might have some truth behind it.

Still should have called though, but to be fair to Plax, we werent there so we dont know what happened.

Giants WR Plaxico Burress shed some light Monday on what happened that led to his two-week suspension for insubordination.

Burress had failed to show up for work on the Monday following the Giants’ 26-23 win over the Bengals, and did not respond to several phone calls by the team to explain his unexcused absence both Monday and Tuesday following the game.

“I ran into some family issues as far as taking my son to school and things like that,” Burress said Monday during a conference call with reporters. “It was not like I purposely missed out or that was my intention. It just seemed to happen that way and I didn’t feel any reason to explain to them what happened or why I missed because I don’t feel it is really anybody’s business. It is like I told them, if I had a decision to make as far as my family and my son and things like that, I wouldn’t change anything about it and I would still make the same decision to do that.

“Maybe I would have put a phone call in, but that probably would have been the only thing. As far as things like that, I am going to always put those things first and I think that is one thing that people have to understand, but I don’t have any regrets for it.”

Burress also met with Giants coach Tom Coughlin on Monday to clear the air.

“As far as the same page, I know what he expects. As far as being on the same page, we hit and miss sometimes and things like that,” Burress said. ” We had a conversation today and we talked and I listened and didn’t really have too much to say and we just move on from there and we just go on to Monday night.”

Burress later commented on whether or not the suspension was going to affect his behavior going forward.

“It hasn’t affected my behavior,” Burress said. “It happened, I don’t have any regrets about the situation, I feel good, I am ready to go, I am ready to play, and I don’t see how it is going to affect me.”

Burress was suspended for two weeks but only missed one game because the Giants had a bye in Week 4. He will return for next Monday night’s game against the Browns.

I understand and agree FULLY that family comes first...

but not to high on some of the comments Burress made in the article, seems like he has somewhat of a grudge against the organization..

I don't see why he didn't just call though. It wouldn't have taken over a minute to let SOMEONE in the organization know that he wasn't going to come.
