All he could do was laugh.

Entering his third season as Lions coach, Rod Marinelli finally was free of controversies and distractions.

Then came a bombshell from the Army.

On the day players reported to training camp, the Lions learned Caleb Campbell, a seventh-round pick out of West Point, would have to report to military duty instead. The Army revised the policy that would have allowed Campbell to play pro football while on active duty.

I thought I was going to get in clean,” Marinelli said.

So much for that.

“Obviously nobody likes surprises, but you’ve just got to salute and move on,” said Marinelli, an Army veteran.

When the Lions used the 218th overall pick on Campbell in April, it was a national story. Campbell was at the draft at Radio City Music Hall in New York, and fans chanted, “USA! USA!” The Lions hoped Campbell, a safety in college, could compete at linebacker and on special teams. He at least had a shot at making the practice squad.

But the story was controversial. There was debate about the policy as Campbell participated in the Lions’ off-season program.

News broke that the policy was under review. Marinelli said the Lions checked with West Point as late as last week.

“We were assured everything was fine,” Marinelli said.

The Lions agreed to a contract with Campbell on Tuesday, but he never signed it
That's some bull <Censored> if you ask me, I mean he might of not even made the team but we just wasted a pick on a guy that won't even be allowed to play in the league. The Army better reconsider that descion for next year, because that is some crap.

Yea but the Army was the one who told him he could join the NFL Draft, and that he could play for the team even if he was on term for the Army. They just blew their word completly.

It's like WTF, it's one guy. Let him play. Are they going to miss him that much?

If they let it slide once, it'll happen again and again.

I disagree with the decision, but they are right...

I know that West Point gives you free tuition, in return for serving (5?) years after graduation.

I'm not saying he used the system - but Army can be thinking that. They allowed him to go to the school with the knowledge that he'd then serve for the country.

That's the reason why this is wrong. If they didn't allow him to enter the draft, it would of been a big deal. But they let him enter, he gets drafted, THEN they pull him back in. They are not keeping their word, and that's just wrong.

Exactly, this guy would of been a HUGE fan favorite, and maybe even a good player. Now the Lions are stuck with -1 pick pretty much.

I get why you're upset, but the -1 pick doesn't make sense. He was a 7th round pick, you know how much of a difference Mr. Ramzee Robinson made last season? Zero.

Although he did look like he could be a decent player.

Well I mean, we could of picked someone else who could of been a great player for us, ala guys like Tom Brady and such.

I mean it's like forefitting the pick, kinda bogus.

Sure we could've picked a guy like Brady, but lets not play the what if game. He was only taken because of his story. He looked decent.

Yeah but still turned out to be a waste of a pick, could of had a decent backup if the Army would of just told him to stay out of the draft.
