This is a great sign for the team if we can get it done, fills the gap we have when Bailey left us.The Lions hope to sign free agent linebacker Takeo Spikes before training camp. Players report tomorrow and begin practicing Thursday morning.
“I think there’s a chance if we can come to terms that we could get him before camp,” coach Rod Marinelli said today.
But Spikes apparently is also exploring other options.
“There’s an interest there on both sides,” president Matt Millen said. “I think he wants to still look at some things. We’ll be patient.”
Spikes, 31, is a two-time Pro Bowler who has played for Cincinnati, Buffalo and Philadelphia. He is coming off shoulder surgery. He visited the Lions recently, and Marinelli called him “a real pro.”
“Our whole defensive staff really enjoyed him,” Marinelli said.
Marinelli said Spikes could compete on the strong side and in some nickel situations.
“He gives you a wealth of experience,” Marinelli said. “He’s played at a tremendous level, and I think he’s still got a lot of rubber left on the tires.”
Spikes’ agent, Todd France, has not returned messages.
