"When I was coming out of high school, that's all I thought about doing, was playing here," Kobe Bryant told the media, following last weekend's Sixers/Lakers match-up. "Back then, the big deal for me was being able to get up in the morning, get up at my parents' house and go to shootaround, come back and do my homework, and then go play the game.
"That was, like, awesome to me. So yeah, I've thought about that."
Kobe Bryant dreamed of playing for the Sixers once? Certainly a pleasant thought for Sixers' fans given how often we hear Kobe's name attached to trade now-a-days. Apparently content with the Lakers, Bryant made no secret of how special it is to return to his home-city. "It's always special coming here," Bryant said. "Every time I come here, I realize how much I miss it. It's always fun," Bryant said.
Kobe was a rising star at Lower Merion High School, before leaving to go straight to the NBA. Bryant's comments may be pleasing enough to Sixers' management but don't expect Philadelphia to set their sites on him yet. Philadelphia will have some flexible cap space heading into this summers, however Kobe cannot opt out of his current deal until the 2008-09 season.
Interestingly enough as well, Kobe is the only player in the NBA with a full no-trade clause in his contract. Earlier in the summer he made it clear that he wanted to be dealt to a title-contending team. This would eliminate the Sixers from that mix but considering what teams would have to give up in order to land his services, Kobe doesn't have very many contenders out there to be traded to. -AE
