I swear, had I been coach of the Chicago Bears, this move would have been made weeks ago. What move, you ask? The move made by head coach Lovie Smith to place Kyle Orton ahead of Brian Griese on the depth chart in Week 15. What this means for the 3rd year quarterback from Purdue is a start against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football.
After exiting last Thursday's game against Washington with a knee injury, Rex Grossman has been ruled out for the rest of the season. Though the injury will not require any surgery, it leaves the Chicago Bears with yet another new chapter in the "quarterback carousel" that has plagued the team most of the season. After winning the starting job from Grossman earlier in the season, veteran Brian Griese and his six starts just weren't enough to convince the team that he's their best option to close out the 2008 season.
Insert Orton, who as rookie in 2005 lead the Bears through 15 games and a Division Championship. "I'm a better player now than I was as a rookie," Orton told Chicago-area reporters on Monday afternoon. "If I play well and win football games, it will be my job. This is the most excited I've been, and I look forward to the game. I'm just a better player [now]." Orton, 25, has seen no action thus far this season but will get plenty when he faces one of the League's premier defenses and on one of the League's biggest telecasts. Orton was drafted hy the Bears in the 4th round of the 2005 draft. -AE
