New York Daily News -
Frank Isola of the New York Daily News reports that the status of Isiah Thomas as president and coach of the Knicks is now day-to-day. He discusses a list of top candidates to replace Thomas if he is fired, including former Knick head coach Jeff Van Gundy.

James Dolan knows that under Van Gundy, the Knicks were winners and that Van Gundy was immensely popular with the fans.

Van Gundy immediately would find eight or nine players who are willing to compete, defend and sacrifice for the good of the team. He would restore the defensive-minded culture that made the Knicks a feared team in the '90s.

His greatest challenge would be getting through to Eddy Curry, who mostly has looked disinterested this season. However, Van Gundy has had a pretty good success rate working with centers such as Patrick Ewing, Marcus Camby and Yao Ming.

Isola believes former Knick and native New Yorker Mark Jackson may also garner consideration and discusses the possibility that Jackson could be hired as an assistant coach who would eventually take over the head coaching job from Van Gundy.
Even if he went there they still wouldn't be winners unless he traded away some of the garbage they have.

Dear GOD, please let this happen.

Jeff Van Gundy is my all-time favorite Knick coach. And he's also one of the few coaches Knicks fans actually liked. I mean when he was with us we won, but more importantly, we played like we had talent. (even though Charlie Ward and Chris Childs are FAR from very talented PG's)

And regardless of who's the coach we have to get rid of Marbury. There's nothing that can salvage the relationship b/t him and the rest of the team. But I dont think we have to trade anyone else.

I swear Im gonna PRAY this happens tonight.

I hope the Knicks get Van Gundy, too.. that way we know they'll never win the Finals. he couldn't do it before with the Knicks or the Rockets. he is completely illiterate on the offensive side of the game

The fact is we were better off with keeping him.

We won with him at the helm, and the players bought in to his "play hard" approach.

There's no reason to shoot down the Knicks b/c he didnt get ya'll a ring, hell it doesnt look like Adleman will niether.

And other than maybe 2-4 people, the Knicks are completely "illiterate" on the defensive side of the game
We have WAY more talent on this team then ANY team Van Gundy coached in the 90's, everyone has the potential to get better, most of our players are young, anyone can become decent on the defensive end.

I hope so.

I cant say I hate Isaiah, he is probably one of the best "talent evaluators" (if thats a word) in the NBA and he did draft VERY well, but its been all hell since James Dolan took over, once he's out we'll be o.k.
