2010 NFL Mock Draft, Version 9.0

Quick notes:
-- The offensive line fell more in this incarnation than in previous editions. I can easily see how that will not happen, and the tier of OL talent currently in the 2nd and 3rd rounds all goes 10-20 slots ahead of where they sit here.
-- I made many picks in the 15-45 range with the intention of matching the player to the draft slot, not necessarily the team picking in that particular slot right now. It makes some of the picks appear strange and somewhat asinine, but I would encourage readers to pay little mind to the team and more attention to the player and slot. I know that’s not what most people desire from mock drafts, but it’s more realistic to do it this way given the prevalence of trades.
Round 1
1. St. Louis Rams: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma.
An incredible pro day seals the top pick as Bradford. With Washington moving on Donovan McNabb, the trade market for the pick is next to none.
2. Detroit Lions: Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma.
If the Lions are savvy and truly don’t care which stud DT they get, they can extort an extra later pick and allow the Bucs to secure Suh, whom Tampa greatly prefers according to sources I know and trust. The Russell Okung talk is a smokescreen--unless they can move down a few spots.
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska.
They’ll take Gerald McCoy if the Lions take Suh. If for some reason they are both gone, look for C.J. Spiller.
4. Washington Redskins: Russell Okung, T, Oklahoma State.
This forecast got a lot clearer with the McNabb trade. Now Mike Shanahan can perform the overdue deed of fixing the offensive line and it starts with Okung, who has the versatility to play on either side.
5. Kansas City Chiefs: Eric Berry, S, Tennessee.
Looking more like a lock pick all the time. Of course if Scott Pioli gets paranoid about that, they could very well opt for Trent Williams or Okung if he’s still on the board.
6. Seattle Seahawks: Trent Williams, T, Oklahoma.
With the QB issue resolved, Pete Carroll can go about fixing the shaky OL. Williams has the potential to fill Walter Jones’ shoes and should start right away.
7. Cleveland Browns: Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame.
It might not be Cleveland making this pick, but I suspect Holmgren & Co. will be able to sell that they intend to take Clausen enough that anyone who truly wants him will jump in here to take the Notre Dame thrower. The Sheldon Brown trade takes Joe Haden out of the picture, though it does not take away Eric Berry if he’s still on the board and Cleveland keeps the pick.
8. Oakland Raiders: Anthony Davis, T, Rutgers.
I don’t buy the Bruce Campbell hype, and Davis is nearly as athletically gifted and much more accomplished and NFL-ready. Sleeper pick: Dez Bryant
9. Buffalo Bills: Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee.
Too many sources I’ve talked to insist that Williams is a surefire top 10 pick, and this is the best positional fit--the NT spot for a team converting to a 3-4.
10. Jacksonville Jaguars: Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama.
This is one of those picks where I’m essentially forecasting a trade without knowing the team moving up to get here. McClain is a stud-in-waiting and it’s widely speculated that Denver will take him at #11, which means an interested team (PHI? NE? GB?) has a defined target spot. They’ll find a willing dance partner in JAX, which I’m told would love to trade down. Sleeper pick: Joe Haden.
11. Denver Broncos (from CHI): Earl Thomas, S, Texas.
Higher than you’ve seen him before, but this is another case of too many people in the know telling me he’s too good to fall out of the top half of the first round. The Broncos have a pressing need to get younger in the secondary, and I’m a subscriber to the theory that when a team gets a pick via trade, they love to select the position of biggest need of the trading team just to rub their noses in it.
12. Miami Dolphins: Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State.
From a talent perspective this is a steal, but from a risk perspective this is a big one. Bill Parcells loves his big receivers and has never shied from “personality” issues, and the Dolphins have not hidden neither their desire to upgrade the WR spot nor their admiration of Bryant’s considerable skills. Sleeper pick: Brian Price.
13. San Francisco 49ers: Bryan Bulaga, T, Iowa.
This is lower than you’ll see Bulaga in most mocks, but this incarnation leans more heavily on defense. The Niners would be very happy for the board to play out like this.
14. Seattle Seahawks (from DEN): C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson.
The gamble that he will still be around pays off for Pete Carroll. They could probably trade back a few spots and still get him, nudge nudge wink wink say no more...
15. New York Giants: Joe Haden, CB, Florida.
Consider this Haden’s draft floor and also consider it Plan C for the Giants, who would prefer McClain or Thomas. That doesn’t mean they won’t be happy making this pick, however.
16. Tennessee Titans: Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech.
This is the lowest I’ve projected the talented Morgan, who (allegedly) lacks the dynamic element to his game that makes teams above here froth at the mouth. He fills the Kyle Vanden Bosch void with pretty close similarity.
17. San Francisco 49ers (from CAR): Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State.
Wilson is gaining momentum as teams study his physical play and strong character. He’s a great fit, both athletically and personality, with what Mike Singletary is building in SF.
18. Pittsburgh Steelers: Maurkice Pouncey, C, Florida.
The top interior lineman in the draft with the ability to play G or C. Pittsburgh knows they need to improve the up-the-gut run blocking, which was nonexistent sans Kemoeatu last year.
19. Atlanta Falcons: Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida.
His athletic potential is too tantalizing to fall much further than this, and the Falcons are known to be looking for that quality in their defensive front.
20. Houston Texans: Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State.
One person who would know tells me this would be a “slam dunk no-brainer” if all the above DBs are gone.
21. Cincinnati Bengals: Rob Gronkowski, TE, Arizona.
There is risk involved with his back injury, but the Bengals have never been a risk-averse organization. Consider this Dez Bryant’s draft floor, but Demaryius Thomas wouldn’t be a surprise either.
22. New England Patriots: Sergio Kindle, LB, Texas.
Rangy pass rusher with a sound football IQ and big-game experience--i.e. precisely what the Patriots need. As always, forecasting the Patriots draft is a near impossibility as they have traded 85% of their original draft slots over the last 3 drafts. Those 3 second-rounders give them ample ammo to move way up from here. I’m not saying, just saying...
23. Green Bay Packers: Charles Brown, T, USC.
His long arms and freakishly big hands allow the converted TE to compensate for a lack of strength, and the Packers sorely need new blood at tackle.
24. Philadelphia Eagles: Sean Weatherspoon, LB, Missouri.
Philly is another team that’s awful difficult to forecast with their proclivity for trading and their ample ammo of draft picks. Spoon fits the bill as a tackling machine with great range for a LB corps that was decimated by injuries last year.
25. Baltimore Ravens: Kareem Jackson, CB, Alabama.
Late draft-board riser with great fit and instincts that isn’t afraid to tackle, Jackson fits nicely with the Ravens secondary that faces an increasingly pass-happy AFC North. This could be Tim Tebow or Colt McCoy’s landing spot via a trade.
26. Arizona Cardinals: Colt McCoy, QB, Texas.
This is another example of slotting a player to a spot much more than it is a player going to a specific team. I seriously doubt Arizona would take him, but this is the range where McCoy is going to go, and my intention with mock drafts is to place the player with the slot, not necessarily the team. Sleeper pick for ARI: Jerry Hughes.
27. Dallas Cowboys: Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State.
He’ll capably play end in the 3-4 front with some versatility, and he’ll anchor against the run better than most ends in this class.
28. San Diego Chargers: Jahvid Best, RB, California.
The Chargers are solidly in the RB market and Best has potential to make this slot look very low. I wouldn’t rule out Jerry Hughes or Brian Price in this slot, either.
29. New York Jets: Nate Allen, S, South Florida.
He would inherit Kerry Rhodes’ role as playmaking safety, with the hope that he’s more positionally responsible, which is his rep coming from USF. Jared Odrick would be hard to pass here.
30. Minnesota Vikings: Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State.
I’m not a buyer into the rampant speculation that the Vikings must draft a DB here, but Robinson will fit as the BPA on some boards here.
31. Indianapolis Colts: Tim Tebow, QB, Florida.
This one is a test to see if people actually read any comments or if they just blindly look at the team and player and run with that. So I’ll put it in bold: Tim Tebow will not be an Indianapolis Colt. This pick is forecasting Tebow’s draft slot, not the Colts pick. If you send me an email or quote this pick somewhere as Tebow being a Colt, I will publicly ridicule your lack of reading skills.
32. New Orleans Saints: Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan. This is much lower than I’ve previously projected Graham, but his awkward size makes him a more difficult sell above here than I previously anticipated. The Saints should be very happy to get such a value and talent with this pick, even after signing Alex Brown.

33. St. Louis Rams: Mike Iupati, G, Idaho
34. Detroit Lions: Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers
35. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jerry Hughes, OLB/DE, TCU
