The Memphis Grizzlies and Zach Randolph have begun discussions on a long-term extension, according to sources.

Randolph has until June 30 to trigger a $16.5 million player option for the final season of his contract.

Randolph is extremely popular within the Memphis community and would like to end his career with the franchise.

Randolph has talked directly with Robert Pera in the past week and he and his agent Raymond Brothers sensed a serious commitment to keep Randolph in Memphis with a new deal.

"We have a great level of comfort and trust with Robert Pera and Chris Wallace," Brothers told Yahoo Sports on Monday. "Chris and I have been working together for years. He is a good guy."

Just don't overpay him. His skills should transcend age fairly well but don't pay him more than necessary.

He's already 32.

Smart of Memphis to make sure they keep him though.  Still has at least 3-4 good years left in him, as long as he stays healthy

Because they're so fucking close to being as good as the SAs and OKCs of the world, and I want another real, actual contender in the West, especially if my Rockets are frauds.

If by so close you mean a full star player away, then yeah they're close

You can't win without a star player, simply put.

2013: Lebron over Duncan/Parker
2012: Lebron over KD
2011: Dirk over Lebron
2010: Kobe over Pierce
2009: Kobe over Dwight
2008: Pierce over Kobe
2007: Duncan over Lebron
2006: Wade over Dirk
2005: Duncan over Billups
2004: Billups over Shaq
2003: Duncan over Kidd
2002: Shaq over Kidd
2001: Shaq over AI
2000: Shaq over Reggie Miller

Do I need to keep on going?

I would call Marc Gasol a star player, along with Mike Conley. Both top 5 players at their positions, IMO. And it's even arguable that Zack is a top 5 PF.

They might not have that transcendent, can score 30 on any given night, star, but Memphis is fantastically constructed and I'm just baffled by the way their ownership is treating the people who are responsible for that.

Mike Conley is definitely not a star and Marc Gasol is a fine player but they don't have anyone who can take over a game and you can't win without that.

There is absolutely no way Conley is a top 5 point guard

I don't think Billups was a star player.  Those Pistons teams were a phenomenal unit, but didn't have a star player.

Rest of the list fits the narrative.

Yes Detroit is the one exception, but the Grizz are nowhere near as talented as those Pistons, let alone the differences in coaches

I don't think Memphis needs a star. What they need is a perimeter threat. A guy who can create off the dribble, a guy who can get to the rim, etc. Only two teams scored less points on pull up jumpers than Memphis last season. The 76ers and the Rockets.

No, they don't need Carmelo Anthony at the wing to win. But they need someone who can put up 17+ a night
