Yankees sign Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract
Earlier today we learned of Freddy Garcia’s desire to play for the Yankees. Wish granted. Well, sort of.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Yankees have signed Garcia to a minor league contract. He’ll compete with Ivan Nova, Sergio Mitre and Bartolo Colon for one of the two final spots in the starting rotation during spring training.

According to Crasnick, Garcia will earn a $1.5 million base salary if he makes the team and can make an additional $3.6 million based on games started, topping out at 30 starts.

Garcia, 34, went 12-6 with a 4.64 ERA over 28 starts with the White Sox last season. The veteran right-hander logged 157 innings, more than his previous three seasons combined.

He’ll likely be eaten alive in the American League East, but hey, it’s hard to quibble with a minor league deal. Worth a shot, right?

Another low, low-risk signing...possibly medium reward. The Yanks bolstered the shit out of our bullpen and between the Colon, Garcia, and Pettitte rumored to want to pitch (last I heard) again...I am feeling much better about the arms we'll field in 2011. Between the three, our back-end will be fine, certainly not any worse than last year. I do wonder if the Phillies are hesitant about dealing Blanton right now b/c the Yankees are the only team that is interested.

Do not want him or Blanton.

Last time this dude was worth a damn was 05, and even then he wasn't that good.

Spring training is going to be very interesting with all these pitchers fighting for that last spot in the rotation, that is assuming Pettitte is returning..which is currently the word I believe?

He's working out, still hasn't given a commitment.
