Little surprised they used their 5 year extension on him. 60M overall.

Could be wrong but I don't think it makes him the designated player since he's not coming off his rookie deal. I could be wrong

You're partially right.

You have to own the veterans bird rights to extend him for 5 years. Since Washington traded for Gortat, they also acquired his bird rights. You can only designate one player coming off their rookie deal, that's what you were right about.

With that said, 5 years for Gortat still seems a little long.

five years is a bit long but ive thought for a while he's been a pretty underrated player.
