TSN is reporting the Detroit Red Wings have signed defenseman Niklas Kronwall to a seven-year contract extension that runs through the 2018-19 season.

According to the report, Kronwall will earn $33.25 million over the life of the contract, which will have an annual average value of $4.75 million.

Kronwall, who turns 31 in January, has one goal, 2 points, 12 hits and a team-leading 21 blocked shots for the Red Wings this season. He serves as an alternate captain with Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg.

In 394 NHL games -- all with the Wings -- the 29th pick of the 2000 NHL Draft has 183 points.

I don't understand these long ass contracts with a player who is already in his 30s.

I don't mind, he is one of the best defenders on the team, had to get him locked up.
