Prior to the season, the NFC North looked like one of the (if not the) strongest divisions in football. I am completely dumb-founder at where this division sits today and I'm struggling to figure out exactly where it goes from here.
Green Bay - Many practically handed this team the Divsion and Conference crown before the season even started & they've hardly looked like the dominant force. This team looked shaky on opening night and injuries have only decimated the roster even more. Aaron Rodgers continues to be made out to be the second coming of John Elway but in reality, he's more like another Tony Romo. Rodgers is a good quarterback, posts top numbers, great in blowouts...horrible when the game is on the line. The Vikings outplayed the Packers on SNF but thanks to a 14-point swing from the referees and Favre's continuing to force plays, the Packers picked up the win. Yes, a win is a win but Packers' fans have to be concerned with how this team is winning and know that it just won't cut it for the rest of the season. You have to wonder if the organization is a little overconfident and their failure to trade for a replacement feature back is haunting them.
Minnesota - Favre was chased down all summer, given a hefty raise...only to play half as good as he did last season. First the excuse was "no Sidney Rice", then it was "no protection", followed by "no timing with his recievers", and the list goes on and on. Randy Moss was brought in to fill the jump ball void left by Sidney, the defense doesn't dominate games as much as they used to but they have kept the Vikings in every game, and Favre's had plenty of time to get re-acquainted with his personnel. Most of us kept thinking that the Vikings would only get better as the season goes on however, Favre's injuries are starting to pile up. As bad as the rest of the division is playing, the Vikings still have a chance but can Favre sustain? His consecutive starts streak stays alive in New England but I am not confident he plays the entire game. My biggest wonder is depsite the 3-year extension he received last season, is Childress at risk of losing his job while he is seemingly losing his mind.
Chicago - Is Jay Cutler really worth it? What good is 400 yards of passing when you throw a ton of picks and still don't look like a playoff team? The Bears got off to a fast start and Bears' fans are thinking, "here we go...finally as good as we knew we'd be!" Fast forward to these past few weeks and the Bears are hitting that massive slide the rest of the country knew they'd encounter. The Bears have spent a lot of money and sacrificed some valuable draft picks to add the key players they've added in 2 off-seasons but I'll say that they'd be just as good right now with their 2007 roster. Chicago has a gunslinging quarterback, a formidable runningback, and 3 of the most talented defensive players in the NFL...and the conversation pretty much ends there.
Detroit - When the hell will this team finally show any signs of turning things around? The Lions have played some tight games, a couple they should of won, but their record still speaks for itself. A lot of talent, some impressive offensive numbers, but still a bottom-feeding team. Did anyone actually pick the Lions to NOT finish in dead last in this division? Word out of Lions camp today is that despite 1-5, they are talking playoffs. SMH.
