Wes Welker to open season on the "PUP" list

Patriots beat writer Mike Reiss predicts that Wes Welker (ACL, shoulder surgeries) will open training camp on the PUP list and stay there for the first six weeks of the regular season.
Reiss finally puts the brakes on all the optimism surrounding Welker's recovery. While the slot machine's presence at practice has been impressive, it would be a borderline medical miracle for Welker to be full speed in Week 1. "He's on schedule," coach Bill Belichick said. Well this is a huge blow to the Patriots not to have him for the opening six weeks of the season. It's going to be interesting to see the offensive system operate without the guy that always causes fits for defenses, picks up little first downs, etc.
