UPDATE: Forward Kyle Wellwood is signing a one-year contract with the St. Louis Blues, according to Bob McKenzie of TSN.

Wellwood will still have to clear waivers, but that shouldn't be an issue. Ahem, unlike what occurred recently with Marek Svatos - who was scooped off waivers by the Nashville Predators after signing with the Blues.

***

According to Dmitry Chesnokov of YAHOO! SPORTS, forward Kyle Wellwood is set to be released by Atlant Moscow Oblast of the Kontinental Hockey League. Apparently the KHL squad hasn't been all that impressed with the center's play this season.

Chesnokov also suggests, when Wellwood is released, "he will most likely try to become a 'pick-up' around the trade deadline."

It's possible a contending team could be interested in Wellwood once the end of February rolls along - especially if injuries are an issue. When fit, the former Leaf/Canuck has had his moments and could be an asset for a short period of time.

Plus, he would cost very little.
EVERYONE STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM WELLY

St. Louis fast food restaurants are going to love this signing.
Haha. I've never heard a fat Welly joke in a while. I miss him :(. Dude is so skilled but he has a poor work ethic.

Blues officially sign Kyle Wellwood out of KHL
The long rumored and awaited signing of former Canucks and Maple Leafs forward Kyle Wellwood has finally happened. St. Louis finally got Wellwood inked to a contract, a one-year deal for what’s believed to be a pro-rated $650,00. Wellwood will now be on waivers for the next 24 hours as he’s coming back to the NHL from playing in Europe.

Wellwood tried out with Phoenix during the preseason but didn’t make the cut for Dave Tippett’s team. Wellwood then signed with Mystishchi Atlant of the KHL. There he scored five goals and had three assists before getting out of his contract to return to North America to be with his family. Wellwood can be a very serviceable player as a center with his ability to win faceoffs and he’s got some offensive skills. Right now the Blues can use every little bit of help they can get as they’ve slipped down in the Western Conference standings.

Whether or not the Blues get burned by waivers will be the true drama for them. They had their plans of keeping Marek Svatos foiled by Nashville when they claimed him after the Blues signed the former Avalanche star and it’s possible that Nashville could do it to them all over again. The Predators have had health issues at center all year long and there’s no doubt they could use the, essentially, free help. With the relatively inexpensive and cap-friendly contract, anyone in need of an NHL experienced center could be a factor.

For now though, Wellwood as a Blue makes sense with the team still without T.J. Oshie and doing everything they can to stay in the playoff hunt in the West.

The Blues signed forward Kyle Wellwood to a one-year deal on Monday, but he'll be suiting up for the Sharks instead after San Jose clamed him off waivers.

This is the second time the Blues have tried to sign a player from the KHL, only to have him claimed during the 24 hour waiver period by another NHL club. In late December, the Blues signed forward Marek Svatos, who was claimed by Nashville.

According to Blues General Manager Doug Armstrong, because these players were playing outside of North America in the KHL this season, a league rule states that player must be placed on waivers for 24 hours after being signed by an NHL club.

Before clearing the 11 a.m. CT deadline on Tuesday, the Sharks put in a claim on Wellwood.

San Jose will have to honor the one-year deal Wellwood signed with the Blues
