NEW YORK -- Cincinnati's Joey Votto is the overwhelming choice as the National League's Most Valuable Player.

The Reds' first baseman received 31 first-place votes and 443 points in voting announced Monday by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols was second with the remaining first-place vote and 279 points. He won the award in 2005, 2008 and 2009.

Votto was a first-time All-Star. He finished second in the NL in average at .324 and third in homers (37) and RBIs (113).

Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez was third in the vote with 240 points. He was followed by San Diego's Adrian Gonzalez (197), Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki (132) and Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay (130).

Congrats to Votto -- Really was a tough choice between him, Gonzalez and Pujols, but I felt a lot comes down to how he helped his team reach the playoffs and that they wouldn't have gotten that far without him -- thats what made him so valuable this year.

Congrats to Votto. Definitely the most deserving. Although, i'm a little surprised Carlos Gonzalez finished behind Pujols. Oh well. They both finished behind Votto. So, i'm happy.

Car-Go was the MVP imo.
Votto had more go-ahead runs than any other player in the league. And he led the NL in OPS+ and WAR, among other conventional statistics.

not to mention his home/road splits werent extremely one sided

its ok to have better numbers at home, pretty much every player does (except Votto lol) but Cargo's splits were pretty lopsided

congrats to Votto. well deserved.

x2. But there arent many great Canadian athletes in the big 3 that have won prestigious awards. The last one was Steve Nash.

We need to be recognized. Our national team usually gets ass-raped, atleast in baseball, and basketball, and football.
