Yes, you read that right. Lithuania’s Jonas Valanciunas has the highest true shooting percentage in NBA history among rookie centers that have started at least 50 games and averaged at least 20 minutes per game. For those that don’t know what true shooting percentage is, it measures a player’s shooting efficiency and incorporates field goals, 3-point field goals, and free throws.
Once you examine the list, you will notice that Jonas is in some very good company. He was the team’s most efficient scorer, but after the Rudy Gay trade, he was seventh on the team in shot attempts attempts per game and eighth in touches per game. As Valanciunas begins to see more touches on the court, the team’s offensive efficiency will improve as the ball will be taken out from inefficient options and into the hands of Valanciunas.
The Raptors were a bottom 10 team offensively in the Gay era and enter the summer limited in their ability to bring in free agents due to their high salary commitments. Jonas will have to undergo organic growth (as Bryan Colangelo would put it) and continue his shooting prowess into next season if the Raptors hope to turn it around and make the playoffs. Luckily for the Raptors, he is only 21 years old and has a good 4-5 years before he finally enters his prime.
Jonas Valanciunas will be scary efficient once he reaches his full potential. It will be interesting to see how well he does this summer when he suits up for the Lithuanian national team.
Lol the Gay era. Anyways, David Robinson is second to him . I think he had a rebounding record too but I forget what it was.
