Morneau, 32, has been a shell of his former self over the last three seasons, but his recent power surge could make him an attractive first base/designated hitter option down the stretch for a contending team. The lefty slugger is hitting just .262/.319/.425 in 110 games on the year, but he's almost doubled his home run total in the last two weeks, mashing six big flies in a 12-game span.
Morneau is a free agent at the end of the year -- and is still owed about $3.6 million of his $14 million salary -- so the Twins are unlikely to get much in return for the former AL MVP. The PiratesRays, and Orioles all displayed some interest in Morneau before the non-waiver trade deadline -- and none of them added anyone else to the 1B/DH mix -- so he could very well end up on a contending club before the week is out. It's unclear when exactly Morneau hit the waiver wire, but teams have 48 hours from the time he went on waivers to make a claim on him. If someone puts a flyer on him before the two-day limit expires, then the Twins can only negotiate a trade with that team. If he passes through without anyone claiming him, then the Twins can potentially deal him to any of the 29 other clubs.
