Free-agent outfielder Torii Hunter has reached agreement on a two-year, $26 million deal with the Detroit Tigers pending a physical exam, a baseball source said Wednesday.

Hunter, 37, is a .277 hitter with 297 home runs and nine Gold Gloves in 14 seasons with theMinnesota Twins and Los Angeles Angels.

He hit .313 with the Angels in 2012, but his five-year, $90 million contract expired after the season, and the Angels declined to make him a $13.3 million qualifying offer. That means the Tigers are not obligated to give the Angels draft-pick compensation in exchange for signing Hunter.

The Tigers struck quickly after having Hunter come to Detroit for a visit Monday. They'll plug him into a lineup that includes Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera, All-Star first baseman Prince Fielder and catcher-DH Victor Martinez, who missed the entire 2012 season with a knee injury.
Price was a bit high, but that was what it was going to take to get him here. A 2-year deal sounds good. Even if he isn't that good in the 2nd year, it will allow us to groom Castellanos and Garcia a bit more so they are ready when Torii is gone. Certainly a huge production upgrade from what we got from RF last year. Assuming he bats 2nd:

1. Jackson
2. Hunter
3. Cabrera
4. Fielder
5. Martinez
6. Dirks
7. Peralta
8. Avila
9. Infante

Boy do I like that lol.
Now bring back Sanchez and call it an off-season lol.

They're paying him like they're expecting him to perform the way he did this past year and that's not going to happen but he's definitely an improvement

Pretty good signing. I don't really mind the price tbh.

Money is not an object to Ilitch. Clearly wants to win a ring before he dies lol.

If money wasn't an object, Hamilton and Greinke would be signing on the dotted line in Detroit right now.

What don't you understand about your posting ways? Like honestly you know what I meant, yet make a completely moronic post yet again.

hes kind of right about that though. money is an issue but hes still willing to spend some in the short term.

if money wasnt an issue at all then we would be signing josh and zach and really loading up to win.

those would also make me cream if we signed then, or at least zach.

You know what I meant. I obviously didn't mean that we have a blank checkbook lol.
Angels could have offered him 1 year 13 million, Ilitch wasn't worried to give him 2 years, 26 million.

The Angels didn't offer him 1 year, $13M because they knew they were better off using that money elsewhere.

For fucks sake, I didn't say they should have. I said they could have. Hence why he got 13 million a year here. It was his "market value."

How is $13M market value if the one team who had a chance to offer it before Detroit did decided not to and Detroit is the only team that we know of willing to offer him that much.

The market sets the market value, not how much a qualifying offer is worth, especially if a team didn't even offer it to get a draft pick when the guy left.

Doesn't matter if he was offered it or not. This early in the off-season, he isn't going to ask for less than what his qualifying offer would have been, coming off of a good season. Dodgers were in on him, as well as the Yankees. Perhaps they didn't want to pay him the 13 million, and that is why they backed off. And showing by how quickly it got done, Ilitch did not care how much he had to pay him. Thus going back to my first point.

I really don't understand the point to this discussion.

Because overpaying means that you have less money to use elsewhere, it's simple math.

I didn't see us spending a lot more regardless, outside of potentially bringing Sanchez back. Though that hasn't seemed awfully likely from the get-go. We have the resources to make a trade for a 4th starter, if needed. Or just signing a cheaper alternative. Signing Torii at this price doesn't handcuff us.

The price doesn't bother me. He has value in different ways, along with performance. He brings a nice glove in the outfield, and can get those hits at times when you need it. He's also a veteran presence on the team, and will mentor our young outfielders. Also is a great clubhouse personality, just enjoys the game, and I think he'll get along fine with the other guys in the clubhouse.

No doubt about him being a good player but that's a whole lot of cash lol. Hopefully he lives up to it.
