http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8719297/how-kobe-bryant-missed-shots-translate-new-nba-statistic-kobe-assist

A guy who gets to the bucket, drawing three defenders in the process, misses a shot, only to have his teammate put it back for an easy dunk/layup should get credited with something more than just a missed shot. Yes, he missed the shot but he pulled the defense out of position in the process and created a easy opportunity for a teammate. How's that different from an assist? I'd like to see this tracked.

DRose has 5-6 of these a game, which is one of the reasons Boozer's numbers were so much better when he and Rose were both on the floor.

would be nice to see them keep track of it, but it shouldn't coudn't towards your assists per se.

same thing with assisting someone to get to the free throw line. if he scores from the stripe, should be some sort of assist as well.

i always thought if you gave it off and the player gets fouled and makes it yoy should get the assist.

i like the idea of an oop from behind the 3 counting for 3, its harder to do then a damn jumpshot from there.

Advanced stats open up so many cool new ways to record stuff though. I think an assist for a three pointer and a two pointer could count differently. Point being, there are so many different variables in the game, and they are still figuring out new ways to measure productivity. One thing is for sure, simple stats are beyond worthless. They don't really prove anything.

in 2k they have a "points responsible for" stat.
your own points, plus the points scored off your assists. i doubt it includes free throws, but it's still cool and pretty easy to keep track of

I'm sure this was debunked in the article, but without reading all if it, Kobe plays with two great rebounders. There's obviously a better chance of his thousands of misses being put back in.
