So I was listening to a Chad Ford piece on his Tank List, and he was briefly talking about the potential for the Sixers to be huge, soon. And just going into detail, I think he is right on.

They are currently led by 6'6" PG Michael Carter-Williams, who seems to be the front runner for the ROY award. They also have C Nerlens Noel, an elite defensive shot blocker, who probably won't play this year. Despite a decent record right now, I don't expect them to be any good at all, and they should be in the market for a Top 5 pick. They also have the Pelicans pick, from getting Noel in return for Jrue Holiday, and that pick should be in the 9-16 range. At the end of this year, the Sixers will have over $35M in cap space as well.

With a top 5 pick, they can get either of the SF phenoms, Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker, or the offensive minded PF Julius Randle, who would be a great pair with Noel. If the can't get either of those 3, there will be plenty of trade suitors who want to pick up one of the two premiere PGs: Dante Exum and Marcus Smart. And with the New Orleans pick, they can get someone like freshman highflyer F Aaron Gordon, or a shooter like G Wayne Selden or G Glenn Robinson III. And they would still have plenty of cap to pick up a FA, whether it's Melo level or it's a bunch of lesser guys like Avery Bradley, Jordan Crawford, Lance Stephenson, etc

If in two years, the Sixers could end up with a starting 5 lineup of MCW-Stephenson-Selden-Randle-Noel, that's an extremely young team that could rival a lot of teams in the future. They really set themselves up well, imo

It's a long shot, and a lot of ifs. You're assuming all those guys pan out, when you really can't tell if they will.

I do think they're set up to be dangerous in 2-3 years if they make the right moves and don't fuck it all up.

no I definitely agree with you on that. And even if they fuck up with that draft pick they still have plenty of $$ to fix it.

They are going to have to build through the draft, which they have already done a great job of with MCW and Noel imo. Those picks next year, if they draft right, can make the Sixers really scary in a few years.

But I don't expect them to land a marquee FA. Like you said, they will have to go after those lowkey type guys.

My view on them hasn't changed all that much to be honest.  If yall remember my views on MCW during the draft, I really liked him and thought he had one of the higher potentials in the draft.  But right now, he's playing over his head a bit.  And you would know that I was never terribly high on Noel.  Defensive big with little to no offensive game, and a solid defensive game that isn't nearly as good as people claim it is.  Those are there two top players, for the future anyway, and I wouldn't say either of those will ever be good enough to be considered stars.

After that, who do they have?  Spencer Hawes is a really solid player that I like, but I wouldn't want him to be my starting center.  Thaddeus Young is a good player, but he's stuck without a true position, and will he be there after next year?  Evan Turner is likely as good as gone.  And that's really it, Carter-Williams, Noel, Hawes, Young, and Turner, nobody else really moves the needle.

And yes, they have a lot of cap, but who's going to go to Philly?  And they may be just good enough in a really bad Eastern Conference to keep themselves from getting one of those big 4 or 5 in the draft, and the Pels pick will likely not end up as anything more than a solid role player.  The 76ers future doesn't really stick out to me.  Another middle of the road Eastern Conference team in 5 years.

You guys analyze the value of picks in the wrong way

Pels pick may be 10-15 and just a role player, sure. But thats just gravy. The main course is their own pick

Hawes has good trade value now
They really need MCW and Noel to be above average and they need to get lucky in this draft

And the waiters idea for turner isnt a bad idea

Morey turned the rockets around, hinkie has already done wonders and will continue

The problem with this thought process though, is Milwaukee better? Is Cleveland? Is Boston? Philly? Orlando? Then you have the disappointments in New York, Brooklyn, and Detroit. The East is their biggest enemy, as right now they are only the sixth worst team. And that's not even counting the Western teams like Utah and Sacramento.

So realistically, the best they could probably hope for is the 6th or 7th best lottery chances. And that's not enough to land a "main course" as you put it.

When I say main course I mean their pick is almost certainly going to be better than the pels pick

And with draft slot, who knows its all a lotto. Lot of games and by the end of thr season they should be bottom 5

Jabari is a perfect fit for the 76ers. They desperately need a solid piece who can shoot.

Although I love Thad, they would have to ship him off for guard help if they do get Parker.

With the addition of a pick like Randle of Parker, their team would be su=ick. I doubt they get Wiggins.

But imagine:
MCW/Waiters/Parker/Nerlens/Hawes

or

MCW/Waiters/idk/Randle/Nerlens.

They should trade Hawes for a 3 if they get Randle and they do trade Turner.
