It would be better than a wet dream for me...Brett Favre leading his troops onto Lambeau Field wearing Purple and Yellow. It's no secret, both Favre and Brad Childress can mask it all they want, we are fans, and we aren't that stupid...Favre wants to be a Minnesota Viking this season. Many Green Bay fans wonder why? Why would Favre want to return from his brief retirement and wear the uniform of the bitter rival? Well you inquisitive ones out there need to think about it for a second...
Favre wants in on another season and yet I seriously doubt he desires anything short of going out like John Elway did, on top of the world. The Minnesota Vikings can offer that. Think about it, as bad as the NFC has been, in comparison to the AFC juggernauts, the Vikings have nearly every single piece to the Super Bowl puzzle but one...a quarterback. Enter: Brett Favre to the equation.
Okay, so Green Bay has been a sure-fire playoff team in the past couple of seasons...but I believe Favre would agree with me when I say that this team is still a few weapons away from being able to get to Super Sunday. If Favre thought Green Bay was ready to win it all now, he would be at camp with the Packers as we speak....but he's not. I don't care how much Mike McCarthy reiterates his "man-love" to Aaron Rogers, if Favre went to camp and faught for the #1 job behind center...he would win, he's a better QB, end of story.
But you put Favre behind Matt Birk at center and he has one hell of an Offensive line to protect his ass...not to mention who he is handing the ball off too. His targets downfield might be suspect but do any of you mean to tell me that Favre can't stack up as many yards with Berrian and Rice as he did Driver and Jennings? On the defensive side of the ball, the Vikings are set to have one of the nastiest pass rushes ever...one that I don't think Favre even wants to line up against. In the secondary, still physical...Winfield is healthy again, Griffin is another year experienced, Madieu Williams upgrade over Dwight Smith, and oh...Favre's old buddy Darren Sharper.
But the sad truth is that the chances of Favre playing with the Norseman in 2008 is slim-to-none. Not only does Green Bay want to send him off behind enemy lines but now that Favre's desires are clear...I don't think Ted Thompson really wants to give Farve what he wants.
Making phone calls are the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Both of which could be good fits for Favre but neither is in position to win a Super Bowl this season. Everybody fingered Jon Gruden to lunge at the opportunity to land Favre but thus far he seems reluctant to give up any amount of draft picks for yet another veteran quarterback beyond the twilight of his career. As for the Jets, it would be the second best thing for me to see Farve lining up across the field from Tom Brady twice in one season...but the Jets are a younger team that probably won't meet the demands Green Bay has in trade. As a matter of fact, I can't see any team willing to part with a number one pick to land Favre, except for one...the Minnesota Vikings, the one team of the 3 that is ready to win now.
So with Favre taking care of his necessary paperwork to be reinstated and the Commissioner pushing the Packers to make this problem go away, the ball is really in Ted Thompson's court. Thompson could lower his standards and deal Favre's right away for a bargain price, riding himself of the headache, or he could finally bite the bullet and give Favre his outright release. One way or the other, this story far from over and should drag itself out for weeks to come. What will be interesting is if Favre sticks to his word and shows up to camp this week after that "grace period" of a few days expires.
If Favre really wants to be a Minnesota Viking then he needs to show up to camp, create a very awkward environment, and be as much of a pain in the ass as possible. 2 potential trade partners, and shaky ones at that, are not as promising as Green Bay would hope in this situation, but if Favre is enough of a negative headline for the Packers...will they let him free? Or is Thompson the kinda guy that would pay a man a hefty salary and leave him on the sidelines?
To think of all the seasons Favre captured the hearts and minds of the "Frozen Tunda Faithful" and to be tarnishing that legacy as we speak. Wont be long now and the fans will grow tired of it and either do one of 2 things:
1. Turn on Brett Favre ... or ...
2. Turn on Green Bay's Front Office
