Miguel Tejada has been traded to the San Diego Padres in exchange for Class AA pitcher Wynn Pelzer, two officials in the Padres organization with knowledge of the deal confirmed to USA TODAY.

The officials could not be identified because the trade is pending approval of the commissioner's office. The Padres also will receive cash in the deal.

Tejada, 36, gives San Diego infield depth at a time when regular second baseman David Eckstein is on the disabled list. Tejada's presence enables San Diego to spot infielders Everth Cabrera and Jerry Hairston Jr. rather than expose them to too many at-bats, though that's based on the assumption Tejada has enough tread on his tires to play a few games at shortstop.
