Beat writer Brian Allee-Walsh believes the Saints' starting tailback job will be Mark Ingram's "to lose" entering training camp.
For what they paid to acquire Ingram, that's hardly a shocker. Coach Sean Payton is confident that Pierre Thomas will bounce back strong from surgery, so it's far from a sure thing. None of the beat writers are holding out much hope that Reggie Bush will be back, and Chris Ivory looks like injury insurance at this point. If recent history is any indicator, coach Sean Payton will mix and match with no one back seeing 250+ touches.

They have too many RBs I think. Possibly Bush, Pierre, Ivory, and Ingram....eh I guess thats not too many...but splitting minutes would be rough to split between 3 Rbs.

If Reggie comes back, which Payton believes he will, his touches shouldn't be effected. He's obviously a different kind of back compared to Ingram, PT, and Ivory so he will still be used in the same situations he was in previous years. The ones that will lose touches with Ingram's arrival will be PT and Ivory. If he's healthy I expect PT to be our starter at the start of the season however people who watch the Saints should know that our starting running back is nothing more than a name to put on the roster sheet for us, until Ingram shows he can be our feature back it's gonna stay that way.

Yeah alot of people think Reggie's touches will be affected, but they won't. The players you have to worry about are Thomas and Ivory. Right now though, I'm not even sold that Pierre will be a Saint when the season starts. With our stable of backs, plus that awesome contract he signed. He could be a player alot of teams ask the Saints about.

Personally I think you'll see Ingram's name in the starting lineups, but like everyone has been saying, if Bush does come back, then he'll still get the touches that he's used to. Ingram is going to be the every down back, but Bush can be used in so many special situations that his playing time isn't going to effected too much. But that being said, yes, I do believe that the starting spot is Ingram's to lose.
