Matthew Stafford hopes to play in Lions' season finale
Chris McCosky / The Detroit News
Allen Park— Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford still is holding out hope of playing in the final game of the season next Sunday.
He told Mitch Albom on his weekly segment on WJR Thursday, "It's been a slow process. When I hurt (his right shoulder) the second time it has taken longer to heal that I'd hoped. But you never know. Maybe I will wake up next week and it'll feel better. If I feel good enough to play I will definitely play."
That's why, he said, he hasn't been put on injured reserve.
"That was never talked about," he said. "They came up to me and said they were going to give me every opportunity to come back. And I said that's what I want."
Stafford has been out since Nov. 7, when he separated his throwing shoulder for the second time this season. He has yet to practice with the team.
When asked why he would risk another injury to play in one essentially meaningless game at the end of a season, he said, "You never know how many games you are going to get and you want to play in every single one. We're professionals and we play this game because we love it. There is nothing worse for me than sitting on the sidelines on Sunday. If I get a chance, I am going to be out there."
He has been ruled out for the game Sunday in Miami. Either Shaun Hill or Drew Stanton will get the start at quarterback.
