The deal isn’t done yet.  When it is, and barring a dramatic, last-minute change, Stafford will earn $27.5 million with the stroke of a pen.
That’s the signing bonus he’ll receive on his three-year extension, per a source with knowledge of the terms.
Stafford also will receive a base salary of $4 million this year, pushing his total payout for 2013 to $31.5 million.
The cap savings for the next two years (total) will be in the range of $7 million.  That’s money that can be used to re-sign tight end Brandon Pettigrew or defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.
Stafford’s $15.3 million average puts him well below the top of the market for quarterbacks.  But with the money he’s already earned and $43 million in guarantees, he’ll be closing in on $100 million in career earnings — and he turned 25 in February.

Total value of three-year extension for Stafford will be $53 million, putting five-year haul at $76.5 million. $43 million guaranteed.

I got lost reading all of that. I really have no clue how NFL salaries work, what goes towards the cap, and all that stuff. I presume its rather simple, but I'm just going to pretend like it's calculus combined with bullshit.

Stafford will just make $7mill per year after the 2013 season.

It's not much I think for a starting QB.

Do signing bonuses count against cap, do anything to prohibit you from signing other guys or is it basically fun money?

No, bonuses don't count. I think that's why they give them to the players, so they can spread more cap around.

yea it's not against the cap but it's a lot up front right away to the player. Whereas if the bonus is less then the guaranteed money is less because as we've always seen teams almost always can cut a guy in the middle of a massive contract. It seems like a good deal, but if he keeps having injury issues this is gonna sting committing that much money in 1 year to the guy.

Reasonable price. I'm happy.
