According to the New Haven Register, longtime Dallas Cowboys assistant Tony Sparano will accept the offer to become the next head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Citing an unidentified source, the Register reported that Sparano's new job will be made official following the end of Dallas' 2007 season. Sparano is a New Haven native and also played for the University of New Haven.
Sparano was interviewed by new Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland on Saturday, in Dallas. Sparano, who also interviewed by the Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons this week, has been said to be the favorite to replace the 'axed' Cam Cameron, because of the Dallas' ties he shares with Ireland and Bill Parcells.
The Dolphins rushed to interview Sparano this week because he will be off limits for interviews once Dallas' playoff game week begins. Sparano was promoted to Dallas Cowboys assistant head coach last February.
The Dolphins are also expected to interview Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, and Jacksonville assistant head coach Mike Tice.
Sparano was initially hired by Bill Parcells in 2003 as Cowboys tight ends coach. Sparano was later promoted to offensive line coach and called plays for Parcells during the 2006 season. -AE
