SI.com - The Chargers have placed Shawne Merriman on the injured reserve list with a calf injury and a "minor-injury designation."

The team says that means Merriman must be released when he becomes healthy.

When he gets healthy I'd take him all day on the Lions.
Him with Peterson and Levy would be pretty nice.

Merriman wouldnt fit into our defense rip. He is a 3-4 guy when we are a 4-3 defense.

Seriously... He's strictly a pass rusher on the outside in the 3-4. Not very versatile.

Source: Chargers Waive Shawne Merriman

ESPN.com - Shawne Merriman was placed on waivers Tuesday afternoon by the Chargers, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The outside linebacker, once one of the most feared players in the NFL, was placed on the injured reserve list because of a calf injury and a "minor-injury designation" last month. The team said when it announced the move that Merriman must be released once he's healthy

I'd say Lions should try for him. I know he hasn't done anything really, in awhile, but what do they have to lose? There have been other guys people thought shouldn't be given another chance, or they would suck with another chance, and some have panned out. Sort of.(Mike Vick, Pacman Jones, TO, LT, etc.) I'd go for it. Then again, maybe that's why i'm not a coach.

difference between Merriman, Vick and Pacman Jones is that Vick and Pacman got into legal trouble and thats what kept them away from the sport for a while.

Merriman's was a combination of not being able to juice up anymore and being unable to stay healthy.

I do believe the talent is still there and I think the Lions should take a shot at him too. Start him off as a back-up, ease him into playing time, and if he stays healthy and is productive then maybe resign him and make him a starter next season.
