The Carolina Hurricanes have traded defenceman Ian White to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a 2012 second round draft pick.

In a seperate transaction, the Hurricanes acquired defenceman Derek Joslin from the Sharks in exchange for future considerations.

White was a healthy scratch for Wednesday's 3-2 loss in New Jersey and watched the game from the press level, fueling speculation the 26-year-old was on the move. He now joins his fourth club over five seasons in the National Hockey League.

"We've been very confident in Brett Carson's play with the Hurricanes this season, and that has given us the opportunity to make today's trade," said president and general manager Jim Rutherford. "This move gives us some flexibility going forward, and we thank Ian for his service to the Hurricanes this season."

The Manitoba native played 39 games for the Hurricanes since being traded by the Calgary Flames in November, posting 10 assists in his effort. White has two goals, 16 points and is a minus-6 rating in 55 games.

Drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the sixth round (191st overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, White spent four-and-a-half seasons in Toronto before being part of the trade for defenceman Dion Phaneuf.

In 378 NHL games, White has compiled 34 goals and 99 assists.

The 23-year-old Joslin has played 17 games with the Sharks this season, totaling one goal and three assists with eight penalty minutes. The Richmond Hill, Ont., native is in his third NHL season and has totaled one goal and six assists and 26 penalty minutes in 53 career NHL games, all with San Jose.

"Derek is a young defenceman who will add depth to our organization," said Rutherford. "He shows a good skill level and plays a solid two-way game."
