The
Sons of Anarchy
are coming to Bourbon Street.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Saints plan to hire Rob Ryan to be the team’s next defensive coordinator.
Ryan, who notoriously boasted he’d have a new job in “like five minutes” after being fired by the Cowboys in January, eventually was hired by the Rams. But it quickly fell through, putting him back on the market.
Ryan will bring the 3-4 defense to New Orleans, and presumably his brash Ryan DNA. It necessarily will require coach Sean Payton to be more involved in policing the defense than he was when Gregg Williams served as defensive coordinator and created a mess via an illegal pay-for-performance/bounty program.
Hopefully for the Saints’ sake, Williams and Ryan will have only one thing in common — both were defensive coordinators in St. Louis, but neither actually ever worked a single practice or game on behalf of the team.
UPDATE 9:09 p.m. ET
: Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that Ryan will interview Friday, and that Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham will interview on Thursday. Which suggests that the Ryan hire isn’t quite a done deal. Just like it wasn’t in St. Louis.

I'm not a big fan of the Ryan brothers but I'm more than willing to give anyone a shot. It can't get worse, literally.

UPDATE
The New Orleans Saints have hired Rob Ryan as defensive coordinator.
Ryan had previously been with the Dallas Cowboys and it briefly appeared he would take a job this offseason with the St. Louis Rams.

Ryan will implement a 3-4 defense for the Saints.

Sure as hell was a long 'five minutes' to end up with that puke defense.

I think we may actually have better personnel for a 3-4 than a 4-3 to be honest.

I don't think the defense is as bad as it was last year, the scheme and the players were just a horrific fit.

lmfao, I just read that Rob Ryan's contract with Saints limits his exposure to the media. Sounds like Mickey Loomis & Sean Payton don't trust the guy w/o a muzzle firmly attached to his fatass face. This is going to be interesting; I believe the Ryan's are extremely overrated. I remember a time in Oakland where every new head coach wanted to fire Rob Ryan but Al Davis wouldn't let them. I think it was Lane Kiffin whom Davis finally agreed to let fire Rob Ryan and then, well....we all know how that goes.

It's not a surprise, Payton has never let his assistants talk to the media outside of a few press conferences.

Of his three DC's I remember Gary Gibbs giving very few interviews, Gregg Williams didn't give his first interview as the Saints DC until Super Bowl week, and Steve Spagnuolo gave a interview every week but that was obviously during Payton's suspension.
