The rest, as they say, is history as Gregg Williams would turn around a New Orleans Saints defense ranked 23rd in the NFL in yards allowed and tied for 26th in points allowed in 2008 to one ranked 8th in the league in yards allowed per game. Although they were still ranked 22nd in points allowed in 2009, the turnovers that they forced as a defense was the most impressive turnaround overall under Williams.

Sean Payton was promptly offered back his full 250k by New Orleans Saints’ owner Tom Benson after winning Super Bowl XLIV with Gregg Williams as the new defensive coordinator.

Williams has not been able to employ very much use of the 46 defense over the course of the 2009 and 2010 seasons since he has been a presence on the New Orleans Saints’ defensive side of the ball. The main reason for that, I believe, would be one of personnel more than anything else. Gregg Williams’ defensive schemes are complex, to say the least, and I think too that most of the first two years have been spent working with the core group of players under his tutelage in order to get them fully familiar with his aggressive concepts and base-schemes before making the leap into more implementation of the true 46 defense into the mix.
