Rex Ryan Reportedly Told Jets Players He Believes He Will Be Fired

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan is not one for subtlety, and he's keeping no secrets from his team with regard to the apparent tenuousness of his job security.
Ryan reportedly told his players that he is going to be fired, imploring them to "fight with him" for the final two games of the 2013 regular season, according to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer:

"Rex Ryan told his players in team meeting last night that word on street is that he's getting fired and asked players to fight w him these last 2 weeks," said Glazer's extended tweet.

Rex Ryan told his players in team meeting last night that word on street is that he's getting fired and ...

General manager John Idzik is in the midst of his first season in charge of personnel decisions and nailed at least one of his draft picks in first-round rookie defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson.
It is possible that Idzik will want his own preferred coach to helm the team, despite the fact that Ryan has done a respectable job overall.

That's exactly the impression Joel Corry of CBSSports.com gets, given the circumstances:

Chris Trapasso @ChrisTrapasso

I wouldn't fire Rex Ryan if I was John Izdik, but I don't think it would be craziest thing if the Jets let Ryan go. At all.

@ChrisTrapasso It's inevitable that Rex Ryan is fired. New GMs want their own coach (i.e., Phil Emery/Lovie Smith).

The 6-8 Jets are officially eliminated from the playoffs, per Seth Walder of the New York Daily News, which will mark the third consecutive season Ryan has not qualified for the postseason.
Walder documented what Ryan had to say earlier in the week on Monday, Dec. 16, about his capability to lead the Jets for the foreseeable future:

In the magnified media environment of New York, Ryan's recent results don't do anything for a coach's status. Before then, though, Ryan guided the Jets to the AFC Championship Game in each of his first two years.

Of course I believe it. Of course. No question I believe it. There’s no doubt about it. I’m a competent guy, even though I know that will be questioned a million times forward and backwards. But I know I’m a good football coach, I believe in this team, I believe in this organization and I’m determined to bring a winner to this team.

Idzik drafted Geno Smith in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft, and despite beating out Mark Sanchez in preseason for the starting job, the young QB has had a rather disastrous maiden campaign with 21 interceptions and a 62.9 passer rating.

If the Jets had better quarterback play, they might be preparing for a run toward the playoffs. Instead, Ryan appears to be a lame duck coach despite his frequent defensive genius and decent job with a team that has severe depth and talent issues.
Without the stability and swagger that Ryan has brought at least to the defense, the franchise's future looks even more ominous.

It's a shame, Rex is actually a really good coach. It will be shown next year, if he is fired, when they do awfully. The Jets have no talent

Agreed, there is no talent on that team. I think he could be a good coach elsewhere

If he would be willing to do it, which I actually think he might, and if the job would be offered to him, Rex Ryan would be a fantastic defensive coordinator in NE.

Right now the personel doesn't work for it, but NE is best suited for a 3-4 defensive look in 2014. Chandler Jones at RDE, Wilfork at NT, Kelly/Armstead at LDE. Move Hightower to ILB with Mayo, and have Collins and Ninkovich be 3-4 OLBs, both of which are their ideal positions. You let Spikes go in order to bring back Talib and Edelman, and the secondary stays the same. That's a real good defense as it is, and Rex would make it even better.

I doubt Bill makes the offer to Rex, but I think he should. He seems to be too interested in New England while being the Jets coach

Rex has always coached a 3-4 defense, and they don't have the LBs for the system.

Suh was built for the 4-3, as was Ansah. Suh would be way too undisciplined to play 3-4 DE, and as the most valuable piece on that defense, you don't make him change positions. Rex isn't a fit in Detroit really. Gruden would be a perfect Lions coach however; his two favorite positions to coach was the QB and the pass-rushing DT, two of the 3 best players in Detroit. He could fix up Stafford

rex wouldn't need to come in and take over the defense, hire a guy for that. but after i posted that i read schwartz is still owed $12M, so yea doubt he's actually fired.

Why would you hire Rex and not have him run the defense? That's like the best thing he does

a head coach overseas everything even if we have a defensive coordinator, no? so he can still give whatever input he wants, wherever he wants

i want him because he can motivate us a little more. he can make our defense as a whole less arrogant and hopefully calm their asses. schwartz likes our bone head plays whether or not he admits it.

Rex is a smart guy. He would adapt to the talent he has on defense.

I wouldn't rationalize it. I would not be happy at all with Rex. The team is enough of a clown show as is.

This guy has been one of the best coaches in the league since he took over NYJ. He has over achieved every single year, and even nearly went to the Super Bowl a couple of times with a team that had no business being as good as they were.

Eventually, NFL teams figured Mark Sanchez out, and he had to ditch and draft. Now he's got Geno, who fans want beheaded along with Rex, instead of actually letting Rex develop a player who could help him coach a great team for years to come.

Rex has been fantastic as coach of the Jets. He has not had the pieces and he's still come damn close to finishing the puzzle twice. He's had 5-11 level teams the past few years and still flirts with .500 and playoff contention.

Don't fire a good coach over unrealistic expectations.

Yeah let's forget the fact that he was the one who created the expectations, & PROMISED to deliver them.

He only couldn't deliver because Mark Sanchez regressed worse than any QB in recent memory.

I know he wasn't a great WR, and there's a reason he hasn't stuck on since he was let go by NYJ, but Mark had something going with Braylon, and then they ditched him and Mark only had diva Santonio.

That's how the NFL works.

The majority of coaches that are fired have a shitty roster. And the Jets still had an average roster the past few years. A huge part of Sanchez's free fall was Tebow.

The fact is that he created a circus. He wanted Tebow. He loved the attention. And it bit him in the ass.

He's not a leader, he's not a good head coach.

I like to think that Rex Ryan was possessed by the devil. He kept making these promises, he was fat, the team was winning, but didn't get far.

Now he's skinny, doesn't make promises anymore, and his team sucks.
