Brooks' Status Under Review Thursday, April 16
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reports sources around the league believe Brooks is in danger after the Thunder missed the playoffs. He also notes a popular college coach could become the leading candidate if the team decides to go in another direction:
The report also notes the Orlando Magic and Denver Nuggets would be interested in Brooks should he become available.
If a change comes, University of Florida coach Billy Donovan could emerge as a serious candidate to coach Oklahoma City, league sources said. [Sam] Presti has a longstanding friendship with Donovan, a two-time national championship coach who has been open about his interest in moving to the NBA.
Oklahoma City finished the regular season with a 45-37 record in the tough Western Conference. The Thunder tied the New Orleans Pelicans, who earned the No. 8 seed in the postseason due to tiebreakers.
However, game-changing injuries played a huge role:
The end result is missing the playoffs for the first time since the 2008-09 campaign.
- Six-time All-Star and reigning MVP Kevin Durant played in just 27 games out of a possible 82.
- MVP candidate Russell Westbrook took part in 67.
- Defensive anchor and emerging offensive force Serge Ibaka suited up for 64 and missed the last 18 contests.
- Starting center Steven Adams played in 70 games.
Brooks, an NBA player for 10 seasons, took over as interim coach in 08-09 and eventually became the full-time lead man. He was named Coach of the Year in his first full season at the helm and led the Thunder to the NBA Finals in 2011-12, where they lost to the Miami Heat.
