The Detroit Red Wings re-signed goaltender Jimmy Howard to a two-year contract extension worth $2.25 million per year on Monday.

Howard was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

The native of Syracuse, NY, leads the league in wins this season with a 30-12-3 record and has posted a .908 save percentage and a 2.79 goals against average.

A seriously considered for the Calder Trophy last season, Howard ultimately lost out to Buffalo Sabres defenceman Tyler Myers.

Great news for us. Won't run any risk of losing him for at least another two seasons. I'm happy he decided to extend with us rather than play out unrestricted free agency where a lot of teams are going to go after him.

Good contract for a starting goalie that was considered for the Calder last season. After 2 years though, if Howard is even more proven, his salary will be rising.

Good deal for the Wings. Whats the worst that can happen with this? If anything, they'll just ship him out somewhere if he's playing subpar

What Shelly said is how I feel bout this. He still young, and imo will keep getting better.
