Rays Acquire OF Myers in Trade with Royals

The Royals have bolstered their starting rotation for 2013 thanks to the addition of two quality pitchers. Kansas City has agreed to acquire right-handed pitchers James Shields, Wade Davis and a player to be named or cash from Tampa Bay in exchange for outfielder Wil Myers, right-hander Jake Odorizzi, left-hander Mike Montgomery and third baseman Patrick Leonard, according to a team release.

Not saying the trade is good for the Royals (pretty clear it sucks), but think of it like this: this is their equivalent signing a top pitcher. Shields may not be worth a few top prospects, but he's actually comparable to Zach Grienke and Greinke just got a contract worth around $150MM. Royals don't have that money to spend but they have prospects.

Again, that doesn't make this trade good. Just trying to see it a bit from Royals' POV.

Maybe it's me, but I have a hard time believing Cherington wouldn't do Myers for Lester. Would he have asked for Montgomery too? Sure, but I doubt negotiations would stop there.
