The Ravens have hammered out an agreement in principle on a one-year contract with former Oakland Raiders middle linebacker Rolando McClain, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.
The modest deal is for the league minimum base salary of $700,000 along with incentive clauses based on playing time and performance that can boost the total value of the contract for the former Alabama star, sources confirm.
When McClain was the eighth overall pick of the draft three years ago out of Alabama, his five-year contract was worth roughly $40 million and included $22.825 million in guaranteed money.
The 2010 Raiders first-round draft pick and Butkus Award winner is scheduled to travel to Baltimore on Thursday night before taking a physical Friday morning and meeting with general manager Ozzie Newsome, coach John Harbaugh and other staff members at team headquarters. As long as there are no snags, he'll officially sign his contract as soon as Friday and join the Ravens for their offseason conditioning program next week.
This is regarded as a second chance for McClain to prove himself after running into trouble off the field as well as providing inconsistent play on the field during three seasons with the Raiders. The Ravens' commitment to McClain will hinge on his approach to football and how he conducts himself on and off the field, per sources.
McClain, 23, was recently cut by the Raiders.
