Monday, it was clear Anthony Gonzalez, the Indianapolis Colts' 2007 first-round draft pick wasn't totally pleased with how the recently concluded preseason had unfolded according to Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star. That had nothing to do with an injury to his right knee that forced him to miss virtually all of 2009.
"Body feels great,'' Gonzalez said. "Knee feels great.''
The issue is Gonzalez's role as a receiver in the Colts' offense, and how it was determined.
"Until Sunday,'' he said of the Colts' season opener at AFC South rival Houston, "I don't think it's worth speculating.
"I have an idea what it's going to be.''
"What I wanted and what I was promised was an opportunity to compete for a job,'' he said.
Did that not occur?
"I don't know,'' he said. "All I wanted was what was promised to me. I'm not sure either way that it did.
"I'm probably not the person to ask, really. Whether a job is open or competition takes place, is something that is determined by coaches, not players.''
The team's initial depth chart lists Gonzalez as its punt returner.
"It's possible,'' he said. "I have no idea.''
Punt returner? <Censored> are we going to have troubles again on the special teams element of the game. Ugh. As for Gonzo, I want to see him get his looks in the slot this year. I believe he is more talented than Collie, and he needs to see the ball in the slot, where he works best in my opinion. Reggie and Pierre outside, is the best offensive match-up we possess with this receiving core.
