Joe Dumars has been active in trade conversations, looking for deals that can improve the Pistons in the long-term.

"In the vaguest terms I can, we tell teams that we're building, we're building for the future, and we're not going to do anything to jeopardize our future, we're not going to do anything to tie our hands going forward," said Dumars. "So with that being the basis, teams understand kind of what's available, and what's not, when you say that.”

If he was interested in improving the Pistons for the long-term, maybe he should have thought about that before offering all those long-term contracts to players that nobody will really want (i.e. Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva).
