Phil Jackson Wants ‘Melo To Take Pay Cut
Phil Jackson, who recently had a two-hour meeting with Carmelo Anthony, said that Anthony would have to take “a pay cut” in order for the Knicks to have cap flexibility. Fortunately for Knick fans, ‘Melo himself has claimed that he is willing to take a pay cut in order to play for a contending roster.
Carmelo Anthony is arguably coming off his best season yet, despite the disappointing year for the Knicks. Anthony averaged 27.4 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game, while shooting 45% from the field. As impressive as his numbers are, ‘Melo and Knick fans worldwide already know that he can not do it alone.
Unless Phil Jackson manages to clear up a ton of cap space via trade, the Knicks will not have much cap room to play with during the 2014 off-season. However, New York is expected to have a tremendous amount of cap space for the 2015 free-agency market, which includes Kevin Love, LaMarcus Aldridge, and many other big names.
The Chicago Bulls are another hot spot for ‘Melo, due to their dominant defense. If healthy, Derrick Rose would make Anthony’s life much easier on the offensive end. The Bulls also have a great reputation on the defensive end, which is something ‘Melo lacks.
The Los Angeles Lakers, who just parted ways with Mike D’Antoni, are also another potential destination for ‘Melo and his talents. Playing alongside Kobe Bryant seems like it would excite Anthony, but the Lakers would have to make much more moves in order for ‘Melo to buy in to their roster.
