Pats working on a deal for Peppers

NFL.com's Vic Carucci reports that the Patriots are "likely" to execute a trade for Panthers franchise player Julius Peppers.

New England reportedly plans to deal the No. 34 overall pick -- acquired for Matt Cassel -- for Peppers. Peppers would play opposite OLB Adalius Thomas, giving them an imposing edge presence. A contract would appear to be the significant hurdle left. The two sides should talk at the upcoming owner's meetings, but the NFL Draft would be the true deadline for a deal.

Panthers prohibited from Peppers talks

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers denied a report Monday they've discussed trading four-time Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers to the New England Patriots.

The reason: They aren't allowed to have any trade talks involving Peppers until he signs his one-year tender worth $16.7 million -- or until his agent brokers a deal with another team and comes to Carolina for approval.

NFL.com, citing unidentified sources, reported the Panthers and Patriots were close to a deal that would send Peppers to the Patriots for New England's second-round pick, 34th overall, that was acquired from Kansas City in the Matt Cassel trade.

"By the rules of the [collective bargaining agreement] we cannot and have not had any conversations with other teams about Julius," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said in a statement. "Under the non-exclusive franchise tag, Julius and his agent, Carl Carey, are within their rights to talk to other teams about a potential contract. However, at this point, we are not aware of any such conversations."

Carey did not immediately return phone and e-mail messages seeking comment.

I'm just wondering, how did the Pats get owned in the Cassel deal? He isn't as good as people think.

I think Cassel is a product of the system - I mean he did have one of the best OL, then Moss and Welker to throw to in a pass happy offense. with KC's OL and receivers, he won't have the same luck

And what's not to say we're not gonna create a system for Cassell......look what Gailey did last year for Thigpen, made him look pretty darn good. Now bring in one of the best offensive minds as our head coach, and the greatest TE of all-time, along with Bowe. Sure he won't have the same success in his first year or two, but what did you expect.

I don't see Cassell as anything close to a Tom Brady or a Peyton Manning.
I don't think Cassell's 1 season surrounded with the most dominate team of the past 5 years is quite worth the 34th pick in the draft.
I am not even sure if Matt Cassell can put up the numbers he did last season without Randy Moss, Wes Welker, or a solid offensive line.

BUT...

I will say that Matt Cassell is a smart player.
Matt Cassell is volumes better than Tyler Thigpen or Brodie Croyle.
Matt Cassell is already better that Matthew Stafford or Mark Sanchez in that he's already proven that he can handle the role as NFL Starting Quarterback.

The Jury (outside of KC) is still "out" on Matt Cassell...so we will see.

I will agree that Scott Pioli is no "schmuck" when it comes to judging personnel...but neither is Bill Belicheck. I can't help but feel that if Belicheck saw this kid as a perennial All-Pro Quarterback, then he would of either held onto him or demanded more in trade.
