"I'm pretty sure I'm going to do it. Arthur and I have had some pretty constructive discussions. I basically will oversee the football operations. We'll meet today -- not in Atlanta -- and work out some of the final details but I don't think there's any deal breakers here," the words of former coach and current ESPN analyst Bill Parcells.
Offered the job of Atlanta Falcons vice president of team operations by owner Arthur Blank, Parcells has confirmed that he is ready to get out of the studio and back into the game. Though he has no plans to return to head coaching, Parcells will play a key advisory role in rebuilding the franchise. Parcells has been said to have conversations with the Miami Dolphins about a similar role but it seems the deal with Atlanta is nearly complete.
Blank has also informed general manager Rich McKay that he will be out of the role next season, but would like McKay to remain Team President. McKay's decision to stay or leave is still unknown at this time. McKay is also is co-chairman of the NFL's competition committee.
Blank apparently consulted Cowboys owner Jerry Jones about hiring Parcells. When asked if the role of general manager or head coach would be possible additional roles for Parcells in Atlanta, Parcells said, "I've got a list but that's all I'm saying."
"Arthur wants to rebuild the football operation. I'll hire a general manager and then we'll hire a coach. We'll do this together, the GM, the coach and myself. The coach absolutely will not be Bill Parcells. All this happens if we finalize this thing, which I expect to do." -AE
