Panthers sign TE Shockey to one-year deal

Panthers agreed to terms with TE Jeremy Shockey on a one-year contract.
Coach Ron Rivera made it clear in January that he would target a "do-it-all" tight end after he and new coordinator Rob Chudzinski watched Antonio Gates every day in practice. Chud has a history of utilizing tight ends heavily, and he coached Shockey at the University of Miami a decade ago. Shockey will play starter's snaps, but he's not going to be a recommended fantasy pick. He's lost more than a step after the catch, and the Panthers have major QB issues.

The Panthers snagging Shockey! This is kind of an interesting move for the one year deal. They adding an old vet-weapon to help out Jimmy, or possibly Blaine Gabbert or Cam Newton?

John Fox has always been anti TE. When Rivera got the job, he acknowledged that and said he'd look to upgrade the position. Getting Shockey is solid - he isn't the game changer he once may have been, but he can both block and catch at a good enough level that he could help out. I'd like to see us get an athletic project at TE round 4 or 5 as well, but this is a great start.

So you go out and get a guy that has been known (not in New Orleans) to not have a great attitude and is broken, as in he won't stay healthy over 16 games? Jeremy Shockey + whatever young QB the Panthers will start is not a good match.

I understand the signing. The Panthers were in need of a receiving TE. Shock is a risk with his health problems but I understand why they decided to sign him.

Wow, they could potentially have Clausen throwing to Shockey. I hate the Panthers.
