The Padres and Jorge Cantu have agreed to terms on a Major League contract, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter links). It's a one-year deal according to MLB.com's Corey Brock (on Twitter). Cantu is represented by the Wasserman Media Group, and the contract is still pending a physical.

Cantu, 29 later this week, hit just .256/.304/.392 in 515 plate appearances for the Marlins and Rangers last season, though he performed at a much more respectable .283/.336/.462 clip from 2008-2009. Capable of playing the corner infield spots and filling in at second in an emergency, he offers some versatility and could platoon with the left-swinging Brad Hawpe at first.

Earlier today we heard that San Diego preferred to sign Cantu to a minor league pact.

it's a good signing

their GM is definitely a keeper
for losing Adrian and others, he's putting together an ok team. who knows, maybe their pitching leads them again to greater heights

Giants aren't invincible. i think their offense is really going to struggle.

Dodgers are very similar to the Giants. great pitching, questionable offense

Rockies still play at Coors, and have Cargo/Tulo so they'll be in the hunt

tough road for the Pads, but it's not impossible. dodgers, giants, rockies arent going to runaway with this. pads could get lucky again

Yeah, he can play the corner infield spots and play 2B if you need him to.

Nah, he's never played one in the bigs, maybe in the minors though.
