I would imagine the Pacers would get him on his best behavior because he is smart enough to know that acting up would effectively end his NBA career or any interest in him. If he can stay healthy all year, having a guy like Bynum would be a huge coo. A guy filling in when Hibbert goes to the bench with similar talent would be hard to beat come playoff time.

just gaining more size on an already big team, and adding more talent to an already stacked bench.

I'm pretty sure that team could beat the Bucks and possibly the Magic if Bynum is in shape.

It doesn't matter what shape he's in, he's just not that good. He's probably the slowest player in the league, isn't a good defender, and was highly inefficient with the Cavs.

He kind of is pretty good which is why teams like the Pacers still have interest in him in spite of the character issues that have come up from place to place. The season before last he averaged 18.7 ppg, with 11 rebounds and nearly two blocks a game. He has good fundamentals, especially his footwork. With the Cavs he was still getting back into basketball shape after sitting out a year with the 76ers, with a coach that doesn't really use his big guys. So of course he isn't going to look his best.

Who cares about 2 years ago? His knees are worse. He said he plays through pain every night. That isn't suddenly going to stop. He's slow getting back on offense and defense, he doesn't get as good of post position that he use to.

You brought up his stats from 2 years ago to support him being good, and then say at the end of your post that he was playing for a coach in Cleveland who doesn't use his big guys, when that coach was Bynums coach for that 18/11 season and his lone Allstar appearance.

That season was more off of Kobe controlling where the ball goes, than Mike Brown being the reason. Outside of that one season big men under Brown have rarely shown huge signs of life. None of Bennett/Varajao/Thompson/Bynum have looked especially impressive offensively this season.

And people care about two years ago because it shows what his body is capable of. This season he is coming off of injury, sometimes it takes a bit to get into game shape where it doesn't hurt as much moving up and down the court. Similar to Howard having to get back into game shape before his back stopped hurting as much when running up and down the court last season. If he showed no signs of being any good at all this season would all of these teams be interested in him when there are other big guys sitting around without a job right now, and none of the possible character flaws?

His body isn't capable of that anymore. He had two knee surgeries since, combined with all the past surgeries, and has degenerative knees.

Preparing to play his third game of the season, Bynum acknowledged that he had experienced “little, sharp pains” and said he wasn’t sure his explosiveness would return. He’s still working on his conditioning and timing….
All these teams? No one was willing to offer him more than the minimum, that's why it took him s long to sign. At the league minimum, it's a minimal risk, that's why teams were interested. You're expecting too much.

If you think teams just throw the league minimum at every player without a job that would be wrong. Even with the league minimum there are other big men that are sitting on the sidelines who the Pacers and Heat didn't seem interested in. It is about more then just low risk, there is the high upside they are hoping is still there. The reason they are bringing him in for that upside, is because they have witnessed what he can do in the past, and believe it may just be a matter of getting into game shape by the end of the season.

That doesn't mean the Pacers should potentially jeopardize their chemistry by adding a character concern. The Pacers are good enough, as is.

I'm surprised the Heat aren't just going to sign him to block the Pacers from getting him.

The Indiana Pacers announced Saturday they have signed free agent center Andrew Bynum to a contract for the remainder of the season. Per team policy, no terms were released.

We are obviously happy to have him join our team, said Pacers President of Basketball Operations Larry Bird. He gives us added size, he is a skilled big man and he has championship experience. With the minutes he gets, he should be a valuable addition.

Bynum will join the Pacers sometime next week.

It really wasnt a hard decision, I think its the right fit for me and, in all honesty, I think weve got the best chance of winning, said Bynum. It will be great to back up Roy and Ill do whatever I can to help this team.

why go to the trouble of blocking someone from signing a non impactful player?
