What have you thought of your team so far? Anyone attended their teams mini camps?
Here is some of my thoughts:
- Drew Brees looks to have more arm strength than in years past. It may be just me, but I just thought he threw the ball farther easier.
- Pierre Thomas has put on 5-10 lbs, mostly all in his legs. He looks alot like Michael Turner out there. He no longer has muscles in his legs, he now has tree trunks. Even though he gained this muscle, he looks to be just as fast and quick.
- Mike Bell has looked great. It may be a little early to say this, but he could play a big part in the Saints backfield. I'm excited about him this season.
- The Saints truely have one of the deepest sets of WR's in the NFL. Marques Colston and Lance Moore are both top 25 recievers in the NFL, but Robert Meachem looks like a #1 WR and Devery Henderson has really improved, catching everything and running from every WR position. D'Juan Woods also looks very good, but he may be in a bad situation, PS at best.
- Jeremy Shockey has moved on from the Vegas incident and looks 100% healthy, something we haven't seen from him in New Orleans. He's quick, and making lots of good grabs. He seems very focused out there.
- It's too early to judge the OL and DL, but I do have a few things.
- Charles Grant looks bigger than Sed Ellis. He ran alot at DT this weekend, so I expect to see him alot there this season, with Bobby McCray at his spot. The Saints seem to have good depth at DE with Paul Spicer, Bobby McCray, and Anthony Hargrove behind Grant and Will Smith.
- Saints installed alot of 3-4 sets on Saturday and Sunday. Bobby McCray played alot at the rush OLB. UDFA Jonathan Casillas also ran alot in the 3-4, I think he will make the team.
- Last season, the Saints weakness was the secondary, now it may be a strength. Besides giving up a few plays (it's June and the corners didn't have alot of help) those guys looked solid. Jabari Greer looks to be everything he was made out to be, he was ALWAYS glued to his man. Tracy Porter looks like he is returning to form, Randall Gay looks like he will be a great nickel corner, and Malcolm Jenkins just arrived.
- Blitz blitz blitz. There were guys coming from everywhere. Corners, LBs, safeties. The OLB's played around the LOS alot. On Friday afternoon both Saints corners came on a blitz, which you rarely see in the NFL these days, and if you do it isn't until mid TC. Roman Harper will have a breakout season, he was always coming on blitzes and looks great.
- TO's were something the Saints struggled with last season. If OTA's and mini camp are any view, that won't be the case this season. Just on Sunday's afternoon practice there were 4 interceptions during 11-11 drills. Jabari Greer, Darren Sharper, Malcolm Jenkins, and Tracy Porter all got themselves one.
- Staying with the turnover theme, the defense would try to strip the ball from the ball carrier every play. This will only help the offense and defense. You could just see the RB's nearly popping the ball as they were holding onto it so hard.
- Lastly, do not expect to see the Saints defense like they were last season. There is a added sense of energy now that wasn't there with Gary Gibbs. I'm expecting a special season here in New Orleans this season.
