On Monday night, Drew Brees broke the record for single season passing yards. Many Saints fans say they felt the accomplishment was not only a milestone for Brees, but for the city as well.

Jerry Romig has been the public address announcer for the Superdome for 43 years. In that time, he's seen his fair share of good games, but nothing, he says, compares to what he witnessed Monday night, saying “It was as thrilling a moment as we've had in the Superdome, I think.”

Romig says the crowd went wild when Drew Brees broke the record for passing yards. “There were tears falling all over the place because everybody was so happy. Happy for him, and again, happy for the Saints,” Romig said.

Many fans are happy for Brees, they say, because of his relationship with this city. The quarterback and his family have engrained themselves in our culture, supporting numerous charitable organizations and helping the city to re-build after Katrina. “He’s a great citizen to this entire city. He doesn't seem to turn down any opportunity to be a part of the city. And that’s a wonderful sign of a man whose very generous,” Romig explained.

Bill Curl, who worked at the dome for 33 years before his recent retirement, says Drew Brees is a truly selfless human being. “It’s never done for the photo op, he's not a ham, he's not a guy that’s out to shed all of the light on himself,” Curl said.

And that behavior has helped Brees to transcend the world of football, and be respected by New Orleanians for his character, not just his athletic ability.

Bill Curl says Brees' popularity really began to skyrocket after the Saints played their first game back in the dome, after Katrina. “We felt the emotion in the dome. What we didn't know was what was going on outside of the dome and how people in the midst of rebuilding their houses and everything were watching and listening and so caught up with that game and what was going on with this city. And that carried on to the Super Bowl and now the excitement of this season,” Curl explained.

And now, many are hoping this season will end up at the Super Bowl. But even if it doesn't, Jerry Romig says Drew Brees will always be remembered by the fans as more than just the quarterback of the New Orleans Saints. “The heart of the team and the heart of this town,” Romig commented.

Just thought this deserved its own recognition. Congratulations to Brees for breaking the record. My favorite player in the NFL, the dude has great character off the field and hes a great player. I hope he wins another Super Bowl because he deserves it.

Brady will break it this week, unless Brees plays this last game.

Everything I've heard is that he'll play.
