Nick Fairley: Detroit Lions will make it to Super Bowl

The Detroit Lions finished the 2012 season losing their final eight games for a 4-12 record.

Those facts didn't stop defensive tackle Nick Fairley from declaring the Lions Super Bowl contenders.

"I expect big things," Fairley told Detroit News columnist Terry Foster on Thursday. "I am going to say we are going to the Super Bowl because I am competitive and that is what I want for the team, and it is one of the goals. I am sure we are going to take it game by game and day by day."

We'll stop just short of claiming Fairley's over-exuberance must have come after he read Around The League's pathetic-to-playoffs post yesterday.

Fairley's refrain, which reminds us of an overconfident Rex Ryan, comes after Fairley spent the final three games of the season on injured reserve. He will be expected to play a key role in any improvement the Lions defense makes this season.

Part of the thought process when Lions general manager Martin Mayhew drafted raw defensive end Ziggy Ansah No. 5 overall was that he could thrive because Fairley and fellow defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh would be the focal point of blocking schemes.

"I expect big things," Fairley said. "We picked up some good guys in the draft. It is going to be up to us (players) to getting the chemistry up to where we can play off each other. We are going to do some big things this year."

But the Super Bowl, prodded Foster?

"Those are our expectations," Fairley replied
(
Cut to Lions fans rolling their eyes.)

Well they better get their tickets soon.
Exactly.  They aren't making it out of the NFC North let alone the entire NFC.

They aren't even going to the playoffs lol. Stafford won't get better unless he works on his mechanics, they have no running game, and they run the most idiotic NFL offense imaginable.

Sick of players doing this every year. It's always someone.

And it never works either. It puts a target on the team, the QB, and the coach and gives them huge expectations to live up to, not to mention making them the butt of a thousand jokes when they don't even make the playoffs.

you guys averaged 100 ypg rushing. 23rd in the league. that's pretty bad. granted you had injuries to RBs but you guys always seem to have injured RBs.

ok, his superbowl prediction isnt based on last year, its based on the improvements we made this year, so our running game has improved.

You have no RB who strikes fear into opposing Ds, unless Best miraculously recovers.

Well obviously not, but the Lions aren't a playoff team barring a Rodgers or AP injury.

they arent that far away from playoff contention. reggie bush is going to open up the field a lot more.

am i saying superbowl? no. thats idiotic, but you have to aim for that. you dont want a team player coming out saying the team sucks.

I'd feel more confident of this if Stafford went out and said he was an elite QB

Last two guys to call themselves elite got SB MVP
