FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Rex Ryan's mouth strikes again.

Moments after his team's 37-16 loss Sunday night to the New England Patriots, a frustrated Ryan lost his cool for a moment and cursed a fan -- and the NFL is investigating the matter, a league spokesman confirmed Monday.

Video of the incident, which hit the Internet, shows the brief exchange between the New York Jets' coach and a fan who isn't seen in the shot.

"Hey, Rex, Belichick is better than you," the fan screamed to Ryan, who was walking off the field and into the locker room tunnel with the rest of the team.

"Shut the f--- up," Ryan yelled back.

Ryan could be subject to a fine by the league or the Jets.

"We'll take a look at it but don't want to speculate on any outcome," a league spokesman said.

In January 2009, Ryan was fined $50,000 by the Jets for making an obscene gesture toward a fan at a martial arts event in the Miami area. That incident was caught on a cell-phone camera.

On Sunday night, Ryan's temper flared on at least two occasions. Late in the second quarter, he was livid when quarterback Mark Sanchez called a timeout with at least 17 seconds remaining on the play clock before a third-down play at the Patriots' 2-yard line. The clock-management gaffe proved costly, as Tom Brady rallied the Patriots to a go-ahead touchdown in the final seconds.

Ryan later told NBC sideline reporter Michele Tafoya at halftime that the timeout was "the stupidest thing in football history."

Ryan's counterpart, Bill Belichick, also reportedly used profanity after the game. According to the New York Post, he told his son during the postgame celebration: "Thirty-seven points on the best defense in the league" and then used a vulgarity.

The league won't investigate that because it was in a private conversation, the spokesman said.

Rex Ryan apologizes for cursing at a fan

Rex Ryan responded to the video of him cursing at a fan while heading to the locker room during Sunday night’s loss to the Patriots during his press conference on Monday.

“I obviously made a mistake,” Ryan said, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. “I was full of emotion and just popped off. … I apologize. I made a mistake.”

Ryan’s apology is pretty much what you’d expect given the nature of what happened, although that doesn’t mean he’ll be off the hook with the league. Ryan can expect a pretty hefty fine from the office for blurting out an obscenity in the direction of several paying customers. Given the fact that he took a $50,000 hit for flipping the bird outside of an NFL stadium, you’d imagine this one would be even bigger. Florio suggested it would be a six-figure job earlier Monday and it wouldn’t be surprising to see that come true.

Ryan also weighed in on the other bout of profanity from Sunday night. Bill Belichick reportedly told his son “Thirty-seven points on the best defense in the league, suck my d–k” after the Pats put the final touches on their 37-21 victory. Ryan joked that he said the same thing to his son after last year’s playoff victory, before adding that he wasn’t offended and that is is “something I’ll bring up to him after we beat em in the playoffs again this year.”

What? You thought another blowout loss to the Patriots would turn Ryan into a different person?

If Ryan’s looking for something else to curse about, he might find it in LaDainian Tomlinson’s knee. The Jets running back sprained his MCL late in Sunday night’s game and with a quick turnaround before the Thursday nighter in Denver it seems unlikely that he’ll be able to play. That would make life even more difficult on a Jets offense that doesn’t need any more obstacles.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/11/20/report-rex-ryan-will-be-fined-up-to-100000-on-monday/

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the NFL is expected to fine Ryan between $75,000 and $100,000 for shouting a four-letter profanity at a paying customer while walking into the tunnel at halftime of last Sunday night’s game. Per Schefter, Commissioner Roger Goodell still wants to consider the facts of the case.

We’re not sure what there really is to consider. Rex said it, and it was caught on tape.

A fine north of $50,000 makes sense, given that Rex was fined $50,000 for a shooting a middle finger to a random fan at a non-NFL event in January 2010, when Rex was off the clock and the Jets’ season had ended. With the NFL intent on ensuring that folks choose to fork over good money to attend games, NFL coaches can’t be telling those folks who fork to “shut the [Corso] up.”
And yet Schwartz and Harbaugh were never punished for their post-game handshake scuffle. Goodell needs to learn: if you're going to fine one guy, fine 'em all for these issues. Thats fucking bull****.
